We'd fallen asleep underneath the stars that night. I awoke to a banging it was loud and inconsistent. I shake Mason as to wake him up, his eyes opened and he looked a bit confused to why I had woken him up.
I put a finger to my mouth to tell him to not talk and point at him, my ears and the boards where the banging came from. Mason nodded and we grabbed the blankets and quietly opened and closed the door.
"What was that?" Mason asks tired, he yawns some tears coming to his eyes due to the earliness
"I don't really know..I just had a gut feeling to get out of the backyard- it also smelt pretty bad maybe like mold?" I'm a bit worried about what that was. Mason notices my jitters and looks down slightly looking at me now
"What's wrong? You seem on edge, would it make you feel better if we boarded the doors up? Because that was pretty creepy" I nod quickly and send a friend of mine in the area a text reading
'Some weird banging outside we're boarding the doors up you should do the same just in case' His name is Daniel one of my close friends from hockey. Mason and I pile up the denser furniture against the bottom of the door and then almost like playing Tetris, pile them so that it's snug and fitted so it won't come loose. It made me feel just a little better. We head upstairs again peering out the window. I almost screamed when I looked out of it, Mason had covered my mouth before hand. I started breathing heavier.
"T-There were zombies- are zombies even real is everyone playing a prank on us..." I kept hyperventilating in panic. There were zombies outside and they're going to eat us. I don't want to die to a zombie. I'm shaking uncontrollably I'm scared.
"Shh" Mason grabs my shoulders gently, then rubbing his hands up and down my arms. It was comforting. I thought about our parents. My eyes gloss over realising they're outside with those zombies. "It's okay, you're okay." Mason embraces me when he realises I was crying. He rubbed my back in small circles. I'm wondering how he's keeping it together right now. We just figured out that there's a zombie apocalypse and he's so calm.
"How are you so calm? Our parents are probably dead, there's zombies wandering about and we're probably next." My tears continue to pour out if my eyes clutching onto Mason afraid of letting go.
"We're not going to die, and look at the bright side if it weren't for you we'd be dead. I can't promise we'll survive this entire thing but surviving the start is the hard part, we'll get used to it." Mason stopped rubbing my back and we run downstairs grabbing bags for food, water and other essentials like weapons and gauze.
"I don't think we'll need to bring too much," I pause grabbing a couple lighters "We should head to grocery stores first, we need to preserve as much food as possible so eating non preservable will help in the long run." I have my head again, if we're going to have any chance of surviving this we can't be crybabies about it.
"The power and cell towers are going to go out soon, you should text that friend of yours where we can join up with them." Mason looks at me a bit worried as only 5 minutes ago I was crying into his shoulder, my eyes were a bit red, you can see the stains on his shirt still.
"Daniel? But yeah that's a good idea any other people you can think of who you want to join up with?" I pull out my phone, look at Mason for a response before calling Daniel.
"Not really I don't have any friends that live around here, don't think any of them are mentally strong enough to survive this anyways. Do you think Daniel would do good for mentality? We also have to think yeah strength in numbers but food is also a problem meaning no one who's not useful for this team." Mason states this quite firmly. He's completely right too we can't have dead weight.
"He's been super into the idea of an apocalypse happening since he was in grade 2, he is the best person I know for this situation." I dial Daniel's number before giving Mason a chance to respond I sigh in relief when he picks up
"Hello" Daniel responded in such a nonchalant tone.
"There's an apocalypse, I'm wondering where you want to join up, I'm with my friend Mason and the power is going to go out in a couple days, two weeks at most." I say these trying to stay just as cool as he had answered first.
"I'll see you in a day or two"
