I woke up and found myself in a dark environment instead of my bedroom. No begining, no end, no direction. It was scary, and I was alone.
I screamed out of fear and ran to different locations, knowing It still wouldn't take me anywhere.
Then, a bloody figure appeared in front of me and I came to an abrupt stop.
I began to take retreating steps as the figure continued to walk towards me with a creepy smile on his face.
He had scars everywhere, bloodshot eyes and blood gushing out of his mouth, nose and ears. I could tell he was a teenage boy. . . without an arm.
A tear drop rolled down my cheeks.
"Please, leave me alone. I'm tired of running away and living in fear. Please" I sobbed.
A wider but devilish smile crept up on his face and I knew I was crazy to have spoken to whatever creature it was.
He brought out a dagger from behind and moved it without much effort.
My eyes grew wide as my heart pounded harder. I took on my heels and ran for my dear life.
"Anyone!" I sobbed. "Please, I'm about to die. I'm about to die!!".
My mother appeared out of nowhere and called for me.
"Ejiro, dear. Come quick!" She yelled.
I ran faster, and faster. As fast as I could.
But when I got to my mother, she was dead.
I went on my kneels."Mother, please don't leave me. Who would take care of Jokpa, Jomafu and I?!".
The figure appeared once again, right in front of me. I jilted back in fear but knelt back down.
"Fine! Kill me already! Take my life, I don't care!" I sobbed.
It's grin grew wider as it moved closer and closer and closer. Pretty soon, I could feel the tip of the dagger on my chest. I shut my eyes tight as my last tear drop rolled down my cheeks.
"EJIRO!!!"
My eyes shot open. I realized I was soaked with sweat, despite the AC being on.
Jokpa and Jomafu, my identical twin brothers sat beside me.
"Same nightmare?" Jomafu asked. He was the eldest between both.
I nodded. I could literally hear my heartbeat at the moment.
Jokpa brought a bowl of cold water and dipped a piece of cloth into it. He squeezed water out of it and dabbed it lightly on my forehead, cheeks, chin, legs, neck. Almost everywhere.
Not too long, my mother rushed in.
She gave a sad smile.
"Good morning Ejiro" She said.
"Good morning, mother" I said.
"She had anoth––" Jokpa tried to say but my mother cut him short.
"I know" She stated. "I prepared a cold bath for you because I can see you're hot. When you're done come downstairs for breakfast. You're almost late for school".
I nodded."Thank you ma". She smiled and went out the room.
How was I to take my bath? There was NEPA light available, but staying alone in the bathroom was not an option for me.
I looked at my brothers who were already walking out of my room.
I definitely wouldn't ask them.
I came out of my room, and walked quickly to my mother's where I met her folding some clothes and putting them in a basket.
I stepped in shyly.
"Mother, please can you stay with me while I take my bath?" I asked.
Without glancing at me she spoke, "Let me just fold this one. I'm coming".
I smiled nervously and walked away and back into my room.
Shortly after, my mother walked in and I stood up to undress. I entered the bathroom and felt comfortable once I heard music playing from my mother's phone.
It felt shameful and embarrassing. I was a fourteen year old girl who was afraid to even take her bath.
I never dared to mention this to my friends nor my best friend.
What would they think of me?
Finally, I was done with my bath and stepped out of the room. Lo and behold, the figure from my nightmare sat on my bed.
I shrieked and rubbed my eyes furiously.
I sighed in relief when I realized it was just my mother."Should I stay here till you get dressed?" She asked.
"Yes mother" I said, looking at the floor.
"I'm your mum, you don't have to act shy towards me, okay. I know what you're going through and I try to understand you. Feel free with your mum" She smiled.
A released a breath I didn't even know I was holding.
About 10 minutes later, I was dressed in my school uniform and sprayed perfume.
My uniform was a white long sleeve shirt with the school's logo imprinted on it, a black bowtie to be tied on the collar of the shirt, a black pleated skirt that went just above my knee, black knee socks and black shoes.
My mother stood up went out of my room and down the staircase. I grabbed my school bag and followed behind.
I rushed my breakfast and hopped into the car where my brother's already sat.
My mother came out about 20 minutes later, well dressed and little make up was applied on her face.
"Mother, did you take your bath?" I asked curiously.
She looked at me angrily before starting the car, and turned her head around.
"No, I didn't" She said. "Keep quiet. I'm trying to hurry up and take you guys to school and you guys are busy asking me nonsense questions". I stiffled a laugh.
"It was Ejiro. Our hands are clean" Jokpa smiled. And I stared at him, feigning anger .
It was the beginning of a new term in SS1 and believe me, I was very excited. Even though I was also scared, don't blame me, I'm always scared.
I couldn't wait to jump out of the car and greet my favorite teachers, not all. I couldn't wait to hug my friends and tell them how happy I was to see them after such a long holiday. I wanted to hear how they spent their holiday and not be the one talking about mine when I'm very much aware that mine was terrible. I wanted to start taking the subjects I wanted to, as an art students.
I want to be a lawyer.
Our school wasn't so far from our house. It was a trekkable distance actually, but my mother insisted we don't. She said Nigeria had become so dangerous, it wasn't safe to let kids move around the place or go anywhere they liked.
"Kidnappers, armed robber and rapists are everywhere" She would say.
I loved my mum that way.
Mother stopped in front of the school gate and instructed us to get down.
"Be good students. Ask questions if needed. Do well in your kick off tests! " She said.
I smiled, but it gradually turned into a frown."Kick off test? I didn't prepare for a kick off test!".
"Well, you better pass cos your big bros never fail" Jomafu smiled and walked into the school building.
"Why is life like this" I frowned and walked into the school building as well.
He he. Hope it wasn't boring. Tried my best and hope you like it😁😁. Punch that star hard if you did🌟🌟.
