𝒐𝒐𝒐. SHE KNEW. Everyone in school knew. Everyone in the goddamn town knew that Lilah Greene was a stand in distraction for Maddy Perez. Nate Jacobs wouldn't put up with the sugar plum of southern California if it wouldn't have made Maddy intensely jealous. He wouldn't have brought her to parties, wouldn't have made out with her in the middle of the football field, wouldn't have fucked her. It was so he knew Maddy would watch. And Lilah knew. 𝒐𝒐𝒐. Yet, even though she knew, she didn't leave. It felt fulfilling to have at least a portion of the attention of Nate Jacobs, of a boy her age, and be carried around like arm candy. Like a trophy. It was different with the other men she had been with. 𝒐𝒐𝒐. THOUGH LILAH Greene was the sweetest soul in the middle class American suburb, it was as if she attracted absolute pervs. Her father's buddies coming over for a couple cold ones turned into feeling her up while her dad was passed out on the couch. Her dad drinking a couple glasses of whiskey turned into threatening him with a steak knife when he tried to take off her shorts. A seventeen year old boy, even if he was a complete asshole, attending to her made her feel like she was on top of the world. 𝒐𝒐𝒐. IT WAS when her old best friend, Rue Bennett, came back from rehab. It was as if some sort of dead flame rekindled inside of her as the trio reconnected. Lexi, Lilah, Rue. She was no longer forced to be magnetized to Nate, she could no longer be used as a fucktoy, she could be free from her mother's burden of toxicities. And Lilah wasn't going to lie...as her blindness of the world cleared...her best friend's brother was looking very good.
