THAT NIGHT, gwenivere texted elijah. it was only a simple hey, and she tossed her phone across the bed so she wouldn't have the urge to check it. gwen lays on her bed and began reading. elijah had recommended the novel their eyes were watching god, and she actually really likes it so far. it's then when her phone buzzes face down on the bed. when she picks up the phone, it lights up with a response from elijah.  you up for dinner tonight, the text reads. gwen smiles. sure she types, the light of her phone illuminating onto her face. i'll pick you up. what's  your address? gwen types out her address in response quickly hitting send.

she rushes out of her room,  down the dimly lit hallway to her parents room. " mom?" gwen asks, voice soft and shaky. her knuckle patters against the cedar door.

" come in," her mom calls. she's wiping off her makeup in the mirror when gwen walks in. gwens sits on the edge of her moms bed.

"maddy invited me over for dinner tonight," gwen winces at how easy it's become to lie to her parents, " can i go?"

" sure sweetie," gwens mom, brianna, chimes, rubbing in her moisturizer.

gwen feels bad for lying to her mom, but kisses her cheek anyways. " thanks. i love you." brianna smiles back as gwen walks out of the room. now she stands in front of the closet, looking for the perfect thing to wear.

there it is. like a beacon of light, the blue dress cassie got for gwen on her sixteenth birthday. the dress has the most beautiful puffed sleeves, and a soft sweetheart neckline. the pale blue complementing gwens tan skin tone. gwen has never been on a date before, she doesn't really know if this is considered a date.

across the hall gwens mom calls, " gwen? do you need me to drop you off?" just as elijah texts here

" no,  maddy's here to pick me up." she scurries out of her room, kissing her moms cheek and opening the front door. it's a warm night, since it's only the beginning of august, and gwen sees elijah's headlights not far down the street.

his car was nice, almost too nice for a teacher. she pulls open the door to the car, sliding onto the black leather seat. " hi," gwen says timidly. she was nervous that she'd overdressed, but seeing elijah dressed in a nice button down and slacks calmed her nerves.

" hi, you look beautiful," elijah says, giving gwen a smile. the side of his mouth lifts, and gwen notices his deep set dimples.

" thanks. where are we going?" gwen asks as they pull out of her neighborhood.

" just the next town over." east highland is a relatively small town, so it makes sense for them to go to dinner in different town, in case they run into someone they know.

" okay."

the restaurant was gorgeous. it was a small Italian restaurant, with dim lighting. the pair are seated at a table, and the waiter begins to talk about the specials on the menu.

"so," gwen says, once the waiter had left, " what else do you do besides teaching?" she looks up for a second before looking back at the menu.

" i like to take photos in my free time." he says pulling out an old fashioned camera, and looking into the lense. gwen laughs as the flash fills the dark restaurant.

the waiter comes back and asks the pair, " are you ready to order."

" yeah, i'll have the fettuccine alfredo."

" i'll have a large caesar salad." gwen says, the waiter whisks away their menus, and darts to the kitchen.
