"Okay, run that by me one more time." I asked Kenny. We were at his house, in the den.

The colored girl, who introduced herself as Faith Johnson, who also was apparently Kenny's girlfriend of seven solid months. Would you believe that? Seven months? For that time he kept Faith a secret. Hardcore racist, despised anyone who wasn't white in public on the outside, but soft and in love with a colored girl on the inside. Which slightly made since.

Kenny's parents weren't exactly racist. I mean, if a colored was about to get beat down unjustly by some white cop, they wouldn't exactly stop the baton from coming down on that poor person, but they would see it fit to make sure that they were okay after all the rough housing. Feeding them, clothing, paying for things to go towards the protests and everything. We called them the closet Quakers.

A part of me felt whole to know that my best friend and I found a mutual love. The other part of me was upset that he kept this from me for so long. The last half felt even prouder that he hid it so well.

Fooled the hell out of me is what he did.

"Did you really have to keep it from me this long Kenny? I mean come on, I wouldn't have ratted you out or anything." I exclaimed.

"Well how was I supposed to know that? You're one heck of an actor!" He said, his hand at the small of Faith's back, drawing small circles.

"So.. Do your parents?.." I started slowly.

"Yes." They both said in tune together, smiles coming to their faces.

"I told Kenneth here that I couldn't be with anyone who was ashamed of me. It took a while for him to finally stir up the courage, and it was Christmas when I met his family. They're such wonderful and welcoming people. And by New Years he had met my parents, making us one striped animal. Both our families get along just fine. We even have dinner together on Sunday's when mama can fit it in." She said proudly.

Kenny was blushing from her use of his full name, "Kenneth". I laughed.

Brenda placed her small hands on my knee, and I placed my even larger one on hers. She looked nervous.

I whispered in her ear, "it's going to be okay. I promise."

She looked up at me, her big brown eyes having a smile in them before her lips played a light smile on them. She glanced to Kenny and Faith.

"So what now?" She questioned, I could feel her palms sweating slightly through the fabric of my jeans.

Sensing her nervousness, Faith stood, reaching her hand out for Brenda's.

"Let's go find something to eat?" She offered.

Brenda nodded vigorously. She stood, and glanced at me before finally leaving the room.

"This is crazy." I said, sighing as the girls left the room. " I mean, who would've known? Who even knew this was possible?" I ranted.

"I asked that same question when I met Faith. Her and I didn't exactly start on the bad foot that you and Brenda did, but when we both knew the feelings were there, we denied them and denied them until one day our bodies refused to deny each other anymore." He spoke, eye to eye with me.

"Have you two-?" I started to ask, he answered before I finished.

"Yes. On more than one occasion. I thought I knew what making love was before I met Faith, and boy was I wrong." He said, laughing nervously.

"But won't you get sick?" I asked, shocked.

"What do you mean?" He asked back.

"Well you know, we can't even use the same bathrooms or water fountains with them because the germs they carry. And you're just flat out having... Well having sex with her?"
