"You're always such a pain! I don't even know why the heck I'm married to you anymore! You should just disappear! It's your fault that our son turned out like the hermit he is."

"You don't know anything! I put everything into this family and you're off cheating on me? You think the state of our child is my fault? Maybe if you weren't such a deadbeat father then he'd feel more like an actual human being! You're the reason our family is in the state it's at! Don't go crying to me like some victim!"

Slam.

I guess dad stormed off like a child again. Just great. Yet another argument where they think I'm some lost cause. I can't remember the last time I felt happy at home. Every day it's always something new. You cheated on me! Or, I wish we were never married! Or, It's your fault our son is such a shut-in!

It's not like it bothers me much. I mean, I'm used to it. Plus, having such a fragile home situation just makes sure that I don't let myself think that life has anything to offer. It's been obvious from the start that there is no point to anything we say or do. Want to murder someone? Go ahead. It doesn't make any difference because the outcome of life will always be death no matter how you look at it. My friend Lilith seems to think otherwise, but she's always been too optimistic for her own good anyways.

After my dad left the house, I packed up my stuff and got ready for school. When I came out into the kitchen, my mom was crying the way she usually does. I tried to avoid her and went to grab some orange juice from the fridge. I've found it's better not to get involved with a person grieving. It just makes it to where you have to put in more work.

As I sat down at the breakfast table, my mom called, "Milo?"

Dang it. "Yeah mom?" I called back in response.

"I want you to know that your father and I love you very much, okay?"

I silently rolled my eyes. She always had to say these useless things. "Yeah, I know mom."

I stood up, put my cup in the sink, and walked towards the front door. Just as I began to open it, she called again.

"And Milo?"

I stood there and reminded myself not to sound too irritated. "What is it mom?" I looked back to see a sorrowful smile on my mom's face.

"Oh nothing." She murmured. "Have a good day at school sweetie."

"I will." I replied.

...

On my way to school, I met up with Lilith who seemed to be on top of the world. "Guess what?" She asked excitedly as we rounded the corner. She always had some new and exciting news she wanted to tell me.

"What is it?" I asked, urging her to be quick about it.

"I think Fiona got asked to prom by Zachary. I hear he gave her roses and everything! Isn't that so sweet?" She beamed. I could practically hear the daydreaming in her voice.

I sighed. "If it's so great, why haven't you asked anyone?"

She seemed to blush when I asked. "Well, you know. I kind of was hoping the guy I like would, you know, ask me first." She stammered. "Plus, I can't go with just anyone. It has to be him."

"That's stupid." I replied. "Love and attraction are completely irrelevant when it comes to procreation. Your only purpose in life is to reproduce and die- just as it is the purpose of all living things. So what's the point in waiting? Just go for it."

She gave my a grumpy face. "You don't understand anything. You can't just treat life like an eyesore Milo. Life is beautiful and these moments are what matter. Don't you get it?"

"No. I don't. There's no point to any of it. But if you want to fanaticize about unrequited love and stuff like that, don't let me stop you." I said as we entered the school.

"Yeah. I won't, thank you very much." She finished off with a bit of attitude in her voice.
