I sat in my seat but my eyes were locked on his just a few rows away. Empty of course. I bit the tip of my thumb, an action I had done since I was ten from nervousness. I was so busy sitting in curiosity that I didn't even register when Ian had taken his seat next to me.
"You okay?" His voice made me jump in a start. I turned to him and let out a breath as I nodded.
"When did you get here?" I asked in a slight pant as my heart was beating faster after being scared.
"I've been sat here for about 5 minutes." He said with a slight smirk. His eyes drifted to where I had been staring. "Were you friends?" He asked with a slight frown. I knew he was talking about Dean so I shrugged.
"We spoke a few times." I sighed and pushed hair behind my ears. "Did you hear what happened?" Ian's jaw clenched but he nodded.
"He's not dead. He's just in the hospital." He mumbled as if that at would make me feel better.
"They're saying it was a cannibal." I suggested but he just shrugged.
"Who's saying that? Your stepdad?" I nodded.
"I overheard him on the phone last night before he left to check it out." Ian bit his lip but nodded. "Do you think it's true?" Ian looked up to the rest of the class. As I followed his gaze I saw a few cheerleaders giving him angry glares.
"I'm the number one suspect." He scoffed. I turned to him with wide eyes. He shook his head. "Don't bother asking if it was me or not." I moved forward a little and shook my head quickly.
"I wasn't going to. I know it wasn't you." I said confidently. Ian's eyes narrowed as he frowned.
"How do you know that?" I placed both my hands on the table and smirked a little.
"Because you're terrified of other people and touching them." His lips twitched a little as he turned his body sideways a little to talk to me more. "So I doubt you would willingly go out of your way to eat someone." Without warning Ian's left hand shot forward and caged my own underneath it.
"I'm the complete opposite." His voice got dangerously quieter. Without breaking eye contact, I tried to pull my hand out from underneath his. But he wouldn't budge. "I'm just like everyone else. I crave to be touched." He lifted his hand just a fraction. But enough for me to slide mine away.
"Then why don't you talk to anyone besides me? Make human contact." I chuckled to myself as he shrugged.
"I don't want to talk to anyone besides you." He admitted like it was obvious. I shook my head and looked away.
I had been at this school for a week now and the bonfire was tomorrow night. I'm surprised it hadn't been cancelled considering what happened to Dean. He was out in the woods last night jogging. He was attacked by what the police are now saying is a cannibal. I don't know what has caused them to jump to those conclusions but Dean was in the hospital right now, fighting for his life.
I had my stare on the teacher as she continued to talk about human biology but my lips were twitching to smile. I could feel Ian staring at me without even turning my head. I let out a sigh but turned my head to meet his eyes. He let his head rest on his open palm while his other hand placed with his pencil. "What?" I asked but smiled still. He just shrugged.
"What does your mom do?" I frowned confused. "Your stepdad is the sheriff, your stepbrother is a teacher. What about your mom?" I sighed but shrugged.
"She's a nurse." I chuckled. "Not really that exciting." He frowned.
"I'd say that's exciting."
