Was she serious? She wanted me to adopt the baby?! Was she insane - a seventeen-year-old adopting her baby, was that even legal? I didn't have a job, I was young - even younger than her by a few months - , I wasn't ready for that kind of commitment just yet. This was her baby, she made the mistake, why would she want me to take on her responsibilities?! "Wh-what?" My voice was only a whisper. "Leslie," I looked up at her, brows furrowed, "why would you ask me that?"
Fresh tears threatened to slide down her cheeks. "You're the only one I can trust, Holly." Her voice was hoarse from her crying.
"Well, what about your sister? Won't she help you?"
"Pfft," Leslie suddenly became angry, "she says if I'm stupid enough to get knocked up, then I'm smart enough to take care of it on my own."
I always knew Karen, Leslie's sister, wasn't the nicest person out there, but I always figured that they had each others backs. Growing up with the kind of parents they had, they were all each other had. Sisters to the end and all that. Leslie was always there for Karen when she needed her most. I could remember when Karen had been on coke and wanted so badly to stop using and went to Leslie, her younger sister, for help. Leslie some how managed to help Karen get clean. Karen had been clean for two years to this day. Leslie didn't have to help Karen, but she did, because Leslie cared for her sister. It seemed to me Karen owed Leslie a lot, or at least this one thing.
"You can't ask me to do this, Leslie, it's not fair. I shouldn't have to give my life up so you could get rid of your mistake."
Leslie held back a sob. "I don't think of the baby as a mistake. I think of what I did as a mistake, but not the baby. But, Holly, I'm not asking you to give up your life for this baby-"
"Yes, you are!" I almost shouted.
"You watch your little brother from time to time." It was more of a statement than a question.
"Yes, I baby-sit every now and then, but my parents raise him!"
"Holly, please. I can only trust you with this. I'm not mother material, and I don't want it to end up in a bad home," Leslie pleaded.
"No seventeen-year-old is really mother material, Les." I sighed, frustrated, stressed, and a little angry. I looked around the room, I couldn't believe what I was about to say next. "I'll tell you what." I started, grabbing one of her hands in comfort, "I'll promise to think about it," I continued after Leslie showed a little bit of hope, "as long as you promise to reconsider it - keep the baby, or find a loving family that would like to adopt. After you have the baby, you can let me know your decision. Deal?"
Leslie hesitated before answering. "Deal." She wiped the stray tears from her eyes. "I'm feeling a bit tired, so I think I'll go to sleep now."
I nodded and headed to my room. As I lyed in my own bed I thought about my deal with Leslie. I had only made that deal, because I was sure that she would change her mind. Leslie always got into some sort of trouble, but she always dealt with the consequences. That was one thing you could always trust from Leslie, she always took care of her responsibilities, no matter what they were. It's only natural for a seventeen year old to freakout about an unplanned pregnancy, so I think it was just the shock of being pregnant that got her to want me to adopt the baby. Within some time of being pregnant, I think she will grow to want the baby, or give it more of a stable, good home with more mature adults to raise the child. However, if she doesn't change her mind, I'm not sure what I'm going to do, I don't think I'd be any better than her with raising a child. More of these thoughts continued to run through my head as I fell into a dreamless sleep.
