Yoongi and I had become good friends through the trip. When I met him imma be honest, I thought he would kill me and take my things for himself, but actually I think he likes my company as much as I like his.
We talked a lot about family. If we had siblings or still do. Yoongi said he has a sister who might still be alive or not. I told him what happened to mine and then ended up on the topic of genetics, and which parent we both look like more. "My dad had green eyes, and my mom had brown. You'd think my eyes would turn out light brown but their actually pretty dark." He said pointing his finger to his eyeball. He had really pretty eyes. Perfect shape at least. Me I had more golden brown eyes. "It gets lonely around here without family doesn't it?" I commented while we hopped over logs. "We got each other though don't we?" Yoongi asked. I tripped on a root and fell. "Oh you good?" Yoongi squared down beside me but I popped up really quick. "Yeah I'm good."
"You know that river you were talking about? I don't think that's a bad idea actually. It's a lot more straight forward than my original route." I said and he smiled and pointed to his head. "Imma straight forward guy". He had a cheeky smile on his face, it was almost cute.
He took out the map and it was a lot closer than we thought. A few miles maybe. "Ay! The river!" He exclaimed when it came into sight. He bent down a filled up his water bottle with some fresh water.
We took a short rest, dipping our sore feet in the water. My shoes were kinda small for me, but I don't wanna risk running around barefoot. The sun was high in the sky, showing it was about mid-day. Yoongi laid back on the ground and looked at the sun shining through the leafy green trees. He grabbed my shoulder and pulled me down next to him. He sighed and closed his eyes. "Yoongi we can't sleep here" I said shaking his arm. He opened his eyes and sat back up.
"It's so much prettier out here than it was where we met. A gloomy city verses bright nature".
I nodded in agreement. He took a sip of water while I was still laying down watching him. "I think we should go now" he said looking down at me. I stood up and he reached his hand out. I pulled him off the ground and he never let go of my hand.
I thought he just forgot or something but when I tried to pull it away he just held it tighter.
The river was pretty. The water sparkled and the sound of running water was really soothing. Yoongi seemed to be in deep thought for about an hour. An hour of silence wasn't that terrible because it was a comfortable silence. We walked and walked and walked and walked before we stopped again. We stopped again when it had started getting dark again. We had sat down by the water and I washed the dirt off my arms and legs. "I think we should just power through the night" Yoongi said as I stepped out of the water shaking my feet off. "Yeah?" I asked and he hummed. I shrugged and we continued walking.
This time we had talked a lot more. For some reason when it's dark out people feel like talking quieter, so we both pretty much whispered through our conversations. We walked side by side the whole time until yoongi suddenly stopped. I walked a couple feet ahead before I realized. I looked back and he was just standing there. "What?" I asked and and he said "I'll be right back" before walking out of sight.
I stood in place for about 5 minutes. I heard gagging sounds coming from somewhere near. He came back and walked ahead of me. I quickly caught up to him and looked at his face. He looked straight ahead.
"Are you ok?" I asked him and he cleared his throat. "Dandy" he answered his throat sounding sore. "Are you sick?" He didn't answer me at all. Around dawn we stopped again. Yoongi looked exhausted, dark circles prominent in his appearance. As soon as we stopped he dropped to the ground and fell asleep.
I laid myself next to him, checking the surroundings before going into a light sleep. I woke up later and looked at yoongi who was still sleeping. I looked at the sky and it was past moon already. "Yoongi" I shook him and he slightly moved. "Yoongi" I repeated and this time he sat up. He looked awful. His dark circles and his pale face and lips. He was sick and it was very noticeable. "What?".
I shook my head and patted his back. "How do you feel?"
"Like I'm gonna be sick!" He groaned and laid back down. "Don't lay on ur back, lay on ur side if your gonna be sick. You'll choke." He rolled over on his side and propped himself up on his elbows. I think he puked for a solid 10 minutes, a pile of vomit in front of him. I sat there patting his back and sighing.
When he finished his wiped his mouth with his hand and then wiped his hand in the ground. "Are you done?" He nodded not totally sure yet. I carefully moved him away from the puke and had him lay in a comfortable position. "I think," he started but swallowed his saliva with a gulp. "I think it was the river water" he said. He might have been right. I hadn't drank any of the water from the river yet. I had an extra bottle of water and sat it in front of him. He turned his head slowly to look up at me. "Not you can't do that. That's your water" he mummer and tossed the bottle weakly over his shoulder.
"Common, sit up." I commanded and he did so. I opened the after bottle and had him take tiny sips of it. This was not good. When people get sick they can die.
We stayed out all day. His fever was hot and it made him dizzy and weak. He slept most of the day and almost all night. I however did not. I stayed awake and watched him. Made sure he was breathing and still alive every 20 minutes.
In the morning he woke up and I felt his head with the back of my hand. His fever felt better but still hot. I forced him to each a granola bar and demanded he drink some more water. His face was still pale but he hadn't thrown up that day. He fell asleep again and I hoped that by tomorrow he'd be at least healthy enough to travel a little farther.
You know I almost forgot he had a dog. His book bag shuffled a little bit and scared me but I unzipped it and a puppy's head popped out. He must have been slipping it good because it's been months since I found out Holly was around. Holly jumped out a rubbed against Yoongi's face. His arm reached up and pet the dogs back.
Yoongi sat up and little to put the puppy back into his book bag, giving it a quarter of the granola bar he didn't finish.
Yoongi laid back down. "I'm sorry y/n" he said and I shook my head. "It's not your fault yoongi." He weakly laughed. "I mean it kinda is."
There was a paused for he spoke again. "Thanks for taking care of me".
"No problem." I said and laid down.
The next morning came surprisingly fast. Yoongi was up before me and had all his things packed up. I sat up and Yoongi pointed to a price of wood. "We're gonna use that as a raft" he said. I checked it out a bit more. Jumping on it a few times to make sure it's sturdy. We both carefully got on it and surprisingly it floated. The rivers stream carried us a long way. A lot faster than if we walked. Once we his a rock and I nearly flew off the raft while yoongi laughed at me but other than that, smooth sailing.
We lasted a few days on the board. Yoongi stared deep into the water that had made him sick. He wondered why it had done that to him.
I slept a lot, lacking sleep the last few nights. Yoongi and I sat close together. He rested his head on my shoulder and it shot up when he saw something. I looked in the same direction. There was a zombie just standing at the side of the river ahead of us. "Shit balls" Yoongi said. The water had started moving faster than before. We pasted by the standing figure and thought we had made it and it was a false alarm, when like 6 arms reached out of the water and flipped our raft over. I screamed and Yoongi let out a yell as well. Limbs grabbed my body pulling me under the water I gasped when I hit the surface but held by breath when I was pulled back under.
I kicked my legs hitting things as we were pulled down the river by the running water. "Yoongi!" I yelled when I was let go of. I got close enough to the edge that I inches myself out of the water kicking limbs off of my legs. I saw Yoongi's book bag and grabbed ahold of it, mine being on my back.
I ran. I ran and ran until I couldn't anymore, not following any direction at all. When I had gotten away I stopped and looked at Yoongi's backpack in my hand. I covered my mouth and looked around me. "Yoongi!" I shouted and walked for a while.
"Oh my god" I said in realization. He doesn't have his supplies anymore.
He's either dead or gonna be.
