For the next week, Marcy couldn't see me after school. We still talked at school, but with only first period together in a closeted relationship, there's only so much you can do.
I was so lonely I could barely believe it.
I missed her jokes. Her thoughts. Her lips. I knew I would be able to see her on the weekends, but that didn't feel like enough.
A pair of neighborhood kids who had been my only friends before Marcy had started coming to my house after school again. Their names were Finn and Jake. Okay, so Jake wasn't technicaly a kid. He was 18, a year older than me. But he followed his little brother everywhere, because he loved him so much. I found it adorable.
Finn was only 12. As far as I knew (or as far as Jake told me), Finn's dad had walked out on his mom when he found out she was pregnant, and she died in a car wrek a year after Finn was born. Jake's family took him in, with the belief that no one should grow up alone. Sad, but sweet.
Finn liked me. He even gave me the nickname "Princess Bubblegum" because I was wealthy and my surname was Bubblegum.
"Hey, PB!" He greeted me today.
"Hello, boys."
"Where've you been? We haven't seen you for a few weeks." Jake wondered. I considered telling them about my relationship with Marcy. I knew I could trust them. But I also knew that Marcy had never given me permission. So I decided against it.
"I've been hanging out with a new friend of mine."
"You have a new friend? Who is it?" The ever-curious Finn asked me eagerly.
"Her name is Marcelline."
"What's she like?" I took a minute to come up with something. I told Finn that everyone I knew were some kind of fictional creature. Even at 12, he liked to play pretend, even though he knew it wasn't true.
"She's a vampire." I decided at last. It fit her. Dark clothing, pale skin, long, dark hair.
"Awesome!" Finn exclaimed. "Can we meet her?"
"Um, sure, Finn." I stammered out, slightly surprised. I'm not sure why I was. Finn always asked if he could meet my friend. He was a curious kid.
"Cool! When?"
"This weekend?"
"Okay!" I smiled. Finn was so sweet. I liked to see such a happy soul. It made me have hope.
I had no idea how Marcy would react to hearing that she was due to meet a twelve year old who half believed she was a vampire on one of our precious dates. But I trusted that it would be okay.

MARCY
Every day after school, I was forced to spend time with dad and Mindi. It was terrible. All it was was dad and Mindi talking like I wasn't there, but I wasn't allowed to leave.
It was a blessing when Bonnie called me.
"Sorry, gotta take this." I called, already rushing up the stairs.
"What's up, Sugar? Thank God you called. It got me out of quality family time."
"Oh, good. I'm glad to separate you from that." We both laughed, and then she picked up the conversation again.
"So, I've arranged for you to meet someone over the weekend. It won't take over much time, it just means a lot to me."
"Of course, Sugar. If it means so much to you. Who is it?"
She paused.
I didn't like it when people paused after I asked a question.
"It's this kid named Finn, and his brother Jake, who's a year older than us."
"So how old is Finn?"
Pause.
"Bonnie."
"..twelve."
Ugh. I didn't like kids very much. But before I said something I would regret, I reminded myself that he was Bonnie's friend. He had to be okay. I sighed.
"Alright."
"Really?"
"Yeah. I trust you."
"Thank you so much, Star."
"No problem, Sugar."
"Oh, wait. There's one more thing."
"Yeah?"
"Finn likes playing pretend. I tell him that all my friends are fictional creatures."
Oh god.
I sighed again.
"What am I?"
"A vampire."
"Vampire? Sweet!"
"Really?"
"Yeah! That's the best thing! I can totally roll with this!"
"Thank you so much."
"No problem, sugar."
I was actually kind of excited to meet this kid.
