This man, who must be Sammy's dad, came to help, then he tried to take Sammy away, and now, my mother and him were in a full out war. Well, from What they were saying, it sounded like one was about to start.
"Damn, this guy is so annoying." I say under my breath so no one would hear, but apparently Jak did.
"Heh, Yea, I almost smashed his head but he's pretty quick with dodging stuff." He said looking out at the two grown ups arguing. That's when it hits me, the infected people are drawn to sound. Shit. I though to myself. I stand up but regret that decision because of my ankle.
"Ow," I flinch and Jak stands up with me, "We need to stop them from shouting, now." Just as I start to limp over to the two shouting grown ups, we all here loud snarls around us. I look around and see a few crawling towards us. Lesli must have had the same idea as I had, cause she came to stand next to me.
"You two dip shits better shut the fuck up or else we are all going to die by the damn infected!" She shouts grabbing the attention of the two grown ups, both wide eyed. But Sammy's dad didn't like her calling him a dip shit. He started walking up to her. When he got here, he lifted her up into the air by her shirt. Lesli started looking around for help.
"What the hell did you just call me?" He asks. That's when my mom came and smacked him again.
"Put her down right now! If you think you can yell at just any kid, it's an idiotic move!" She shouts, he drops Les, and they are back at it.
"You two need to knock it off, more of the infected are coming, and the five of us can't fight them off alone!" Samuel shouts, gesturing to Jak, Lesli, Sammy, and I. "Plus Sara has an ankle problem, she will need help! Oh my god, are you two even listening?!" He shouts again, and the two grown ups don't even flinch. But it was too late for us to try and get their attention anymore. The infected were already here.
"Damn it! We will need help, but if you two won't fucking help, we'll fight them off our selves." Jak says and pulls out his bat. Lesli brings out dual pistols. Samuel loads up his shotgun and Sammy has her ax out. As do I. We all form a line in front of the fighting parents, waiting in some-what silence. Hearing nothing but the the moans, groans and gurgles of the nearby infected coming. I refused to call the zombies by now. I believed that there was a way to fix this, but we needed the two childish scientists to help do so. But until all these zom-infected were done for, we couldn't do much. They came closer and closer. Louder until Lesli shouted.
"Here they come!" And she shot at the first one that came through the bushes. I swing my ax at the infected coming towards us. I didn't realize how easy it was to kill people. These were all innocent people, with families somewhere. They just didn't survive, I guess. I turn to look behind me, my mom and Sammy's dad were still fighting.
"Are you serious?" I shout at them and cut another infected. My mom's eyes widened, she pulls out her gun and I knew she must have finally noticed what was happening. I then heard a loud yell, but ignore it and continue to attack. Once we some-what killed all the infected, I turn around. My weapon falls out of my hand at the sight. My mom... was... infected. I see her skin is a lighter pail than it usually was. A bite on her arm. She was laying on the ground with a bullet wound on her chest. I look up and see Sammy's dad. Both hands on a gun. He shot her. He shot my mother.
"You.... You bastard," I shout at him and tackle him down, "What the hell were you thinking? She was the only family I had," I say between angered sobs, "What if something like this had happened to Sammy? And she was shot? What would you do?" I didn't know what had came over me. I next pull out a small pocket knife, "You don't deserve to live. You will shoot at anyone who tries to help you," I put the knife to his neck. Fear in his eyes.
"You wouldn't kill me! I'm human, like you!" He shouts at me trying to pry me off of his chest. I wouldn't budge.
"You wanna bet? Those infected were people once, but we both know how easily we can both kill them." Next thing I know, I'm being pulled off of him by the other four. They set me on the log we were sitting on earlier and Sammy walks over to him and slaps her father. He stumbles back, surprised by her actions. She turns to walk away. But he stands up to talk to her again. Once they were done, he walks off in another direction. She picked up her bag she had with her and dusted it off and started to head toward us.
"What was that all about?" I asked her.
"My dad is leaving. He asked if I wanted to go with him, but you guys seem more fun." She says with a small smirk.
"Okay, well, we were going to head into the closest town and gas up and get a few supplies too. My mom..." I started to say but looked behind Sammy to see that she really was infected and took a deep breath, "We were just going to go into town. So, I guess your stuck with us?" I chuckled a bit, looking back to her. She nods and gestures us to follow her. She leads us out to where her truck was, she reaches in to grab a weapon. It was a compound bow. My eyes widened and I remember I had never really used my bow that I had.
"I think I know a way out of the mountains." Samuel says, "And we had at least a few miles of gas left. Lets get to our truck, and leave asap." He starts to walk towards our truck, followed my Jak, Lesli, then Sammy and I.
"I really hate your dad." I say to her. She looks at me.
"Doesn't everyone?" She replies and smiles, while looking at the ground. Lesli and Jak help me into the bed of our truck. Jak and Samuel go to navigate and drive, while the other two hop into the back with me.
"So, what are some of the things we need to get?" Lesli breaks the silence.
"Plywood?" Sammy asks. We look at her questioningly.
"For..." I ask her.
"To build some huts or tree houses or whatever so we aren't on the ground, the zombies could get us at night."
"Yes, sure, but can we not call them zombies?" I ask her. Knowing my mom as one, was no help what-so-ever.
"Oh, um... sure." Sammy replies a little bummed out. We continue to drive towards where ever Samuel was driving in silence. Every once in a while we would talk a little bit. Ask small simple questions like, "Where did you live before you ran?" or "What school did you go to?" Sammy stayed quiet through most of the questions, I wanted to ask what was wrong, but decided against it.
This was going to be a long ride.
