Class

So many new faces...it's so overwhelming seeing the room fill up with these many students.

Sora enters to class looking like he came straight out of bed. Pulled another all-nighter, I see.

He yawns and meets eye-contact with me. We both smile. He sat in the 2nd row for closer view of me.

"Morning! I'm sure most of you were expecting me. Call me professor Y/n. I've written it on the board."

"So I'll be continuing lectures from now on. We left off on lesson 3, so open up your notes so we can—"

A late student enters class late. Brown hair with a fluffy texture, half-rim wayfarer glasses, and an over sized sweater.

"Hey there," I greeted. He perked his head up at me and barely waves. Okay...? Weird but I'll take it. I went on with the class.

• Halfway into the lecture •

"So what we have here is the midpoint which is D and E. Both are congruent sides. DE is equal to one side of the triangle; AC.

Everyone writes along.

"From here, we take X and equal it to 1/2 (30). This is where the formula begins. Try solving it on your own."

I take a quick look at Sora. By the speed of his pencil, seems like he's all set.

On the other hand though...is that other boy doing okay? He's hesitating to write the anything down.

Maybe it's not enough demonstration.

"To be more precise..." I open the marker again. "Memorize this basic formula we've been using."

He watches as I write the formula down, then stares back at his notes. Still not budging.

Maybe it's not the material. Could be something else on his mind and I just can't seem to grasp it.

• Class bell rings •

"Annnd that's it for today. Thank you and please don't leave anything behind."

Sora kicks back in his chair and opens his phone while everyone else passes by.

The dozy boy snaps out of his thoughts and looks around to see everyone leaving for their next session.

He closed his book and rosed up from his seat.

He probably does this often. I hope he's wasn't too lost on the lesson. Maybe I should ask to make sure? Wouldn't hurt to talk.

As everyone leaves the class, I went to his row and approached his seat. "Hello?"

I caught him mid-packing. He looks to his side without fully facing towards me. "Oh, hi." His curly bangs were blocking his eyes.

"Sorry for the sudden approach. I'm just wondering if you're confused on any areas of the lessons we are teaching. Seemed like your mind was somewhere else.

He froze anxiously, then proceeded to stuff his things into his bag. "Sorry, I'll focus next time," he murmured.

"Hey, I'm not here to scold you," I comforted with a little laughter. "Want me to give you a quick rundown for your notes before you leave?"

He paused and hesitated to answer. "Is...that okay with you?"

"Of course! I'm always open to assist." I smiled and pulled the nearest chair toward me to sit. "Let's open those notes back up, hm?"

He shook his head and searched for the notebook in his bag. Sora looks across the class, watching me guide him.

• 5 minutes through •

"Don't let the variables imitate you, the formula will always guide you, okay?"

"Mhm." He writes the order down. Okay, his notes are looking good so far.

"So the square problems should be less complicated since all sides are congruent. That means all the coefficients will be..."

I paused mid-sentence as I noticed him staring off into space. That quick? "Ahem."

He blinks hard and jerks his head. "Mhm." I just need him to get these last few things written down. I sped up the process.

"So for a square problem, it requires two formulas to fully solve it out; area and perimeter, right?"

"Yeah..."

"Let's solve area first. If each side of the square is 8, the rest of the sides will also be 8. So from here, we take—"

I looked over, hoping his head wasn't in the clouds by now. Annnd nope, he's not daydreaming, definitely dreaming though.

His eyes were closed and his head was struggling to stay balanced on his hand. So impressive how one can tune out that quickly.

I lowered my pencil and giggled. "You're awfully dozey, aren't you?"

He opened his eyes and fixed his posture. "Sorry."

"It's no problem," I said. "We made it far enough, so let's stop here, okay?"

"Y-Yeah." He's so gentle. A bit tight in the shell, but cute. Oh dammit, have I even introduced myself yet?

"Probably should've done this earlier, but I'm professor Y/n. I don't believe I've gotten your name yet either."

"It's...Baylee," he responded. "Well hi, Baylee. Happy to meet you."

"Mhm." He looks away the second we meet eye-contact.

Did I see that correctly? Could've sworn I saw a part of his face bruised up. "Your face...did you injure yourself?"

He starts to panic and covers his face. "Please don't look at it," he said in a low tone. Was I not supposed to see it?

"My apologies. Did you need a nurse? I can offer an ice pack if you need one."

He suddenly raised out of his chair. "I need to go." I stood up too. "Y-You're going? Is everything okay?"

"Sorry. Just...sorry." He situates his things and dashes out the room.

"Okay, uh— see you?" Such a concerning reaction for mentioning a bruise.

As he left, I made eye-contact with Sora from across the room. He shrugged his shoulders. He's confused as well.

I was starting to grow interested in Baylee, but the mood was so quick to be ruined. Dammit, I hope that wasn't my fault.
