Weeks it's been since I stayed with Prince at Ms. Bernadette's house and we haven't talked about that night. The next day I woke up on the sofa knowing that Prince probably carried me to the couch. Everyday since that night, Prince and I have been talking non-stop at school and even getting caught doing it in class. Today was report card day, and I was hoping Prince's scores went up. Thankfully it did, from a D to a C. "Holy shit. I did it." Prince was excited looking at his report card as he was standing next to my locker. I shut my locker door looking at mine. "My mother is gonna be so mad. I have a D in math." "Hey, a D is passing in my book." Prince said. I sighed leaning against my locker. "Yeah, but it brings my average down." I said. Andre walked up with his girlfriend. "Hey, so Felicity has a question to ask you." He said to Andre.Felicity? Who's that? This girl walked up giggling and the giggle was nails on a chalkboard. It was obvious to tell that Farrah and Felicity were sisters. "Prince, I was wondering if you wanted to go to the party with me tomorrow?" She asked him. "Oh, I can't. I got a lot of stuff to do. I'm gonna work hard this week on music." I felt a sense of relief hearing that. "Prince, c'mon. Take a night off, dammit." Andre said to him. Prince glanced at me rubbing his peach fuzz of a mustache which made me blush. "I actually have a date this Friday." He said to them. Felicity huffed. My heart sank. "With who?" Farrah asked him. He smirked. "My basketball of course. There's a game this Friday and since my grades went up I can play in it." I smiled. "I'll be there." I blurted out. Prince smirked. "See. At least someone's coming to my games. C'mon Scarlet." I followed him as we walked away from Andre and his girlfriend.
"So, I can come to your game right?" I asked him. He seemed confused. "Of course you can. I need all the support I can get. Oh, I also gotta grab my jersey before we leave so I can wash it. We might be going to my dad's house tonight. If that's cool with you." I nodded. "My mother said she's busy at home tonight, and usually when she says that I can't be at home." I told him. We stopped by the gymnasium and went straight to the locker room. "Oh, you gotta wait out here. There's probably all kinds of things slinging around in here." Prince told me. I blinked. "Like what?" Prince laughed showing all of his teeth. "You don't wanna know. I'll be out in a minute." I leaned against the wall listening to banter in the locker room. All the players sounded really excited for the game tomorrow and I was really excited, too. I had always wanted to see Prince play basketball and I knew he was number 3. That's all I knew regarding basketball. Prince played it, and he was number 3.
The number three is very common and the number three means a few. It takes 2 people to make one child and two plus one equals three. The third letter of the alphabet is C and the- "Scarlet?" Prince had his hand in front of my face which startled me. "Huh?" "You okay? You look like you spaced out." "Oh...yeah I'm okay." I smelled this horrendous smell coming from under Prince's arm. "Ugh...is that your Jersey?" "Yup. We lost last game so now it's time to wash it. I'm a little superstitious. You ever heard that song? Superstition by Stevie Wonder?" I nodded as we were walking to the parking lot. "Yeah, I have." I said.
I yawned as I got in the passenger seat and some kids walked over to Prince. I could hear them from inside the car, but I watched in the side mirror to see Prince fixing his jacket. He seemed nervous. The kids kept looking at me, too which made me confused. Were they talking about me? Eventually the three kids left and Prince got in the car slamming the door really hard. I grabbed my ears. "Oh, shit. Sorry." He put his hand on top of my head. I grabbed my ear muffs putting them on so Prince could listen to music while we drove to his father's house. I scratched the side of my head yawning wanting to have a nap. I reached over turning the radio down just a little. "What did those kids say?" He shook his head. "Fuck them. They don't know you." He said.
I cocked an eyebrow. "They said bad things?" I asked. He turned the radio up some. "Don't worry about it. They don't know shit." We pulled up to a house, but Prince immediately backed out of the driveway. "He's not home yet. We'll have to go to my mom's house." He said. I took my ear muffs off and realized we just went down the road a few houses. I got out of the car once we parked in the driveway and there was a little boy sitting outside in the dirt. "Omarr, where's mama?" Prince asked him. The boy was more light skinned than Prince, and Prince was pretty light skinned. And this boy had blue eyes...must be his half brother.
