The next weeks flew by fast. Back to her old routine of working, coming home, showering, eating and going into her room for the night. Willa had even taken on more hours at work, now doing 24 hour rotations at the Hospital. She had been up for a promotion to the head nurse of the Oncology Department. When she had found out that she was up for that promotion, almost instantaneously she was about to text Harry. He's gonna be so proud, she thought to herself but quickly stopped. She hadn't replied to any of his texts since she saw the pictures of Anna and him that one night. Not that he had sent too many but it seemed he was catching onto the fact she didn't want to speak but in true fashion, she saw he didn't understand why she didn't want to.Kill all men.
Alex and Hayden decided to have a small party for Willa's promotion and for Willa deciding she wanted to pursue her doctorate. Willa fought the fact they wanted to have a party for her but eventually gave in. She hadn't been out out in at least a month and took this as her opportunity. She even dolled herself up for her night out. She put on her makeup, making sure it looked as natural as possible and let her hair air dry so it got wavy. She put two clips on to slightly style it and looked in the mirror. She smiled at herself, trying to get the feeling of confidence she had been lacking. She put on a red and white striped body suit with a plaid high waisted skirt and black boots with a 6 inch heel. Being 5 feet exact, she did everything she could to feel taller. Spritzing some of the Billie Eilish perfume she fought to buy on, she rubbed her hands over her skirt and decided it was good. She looked good.
Alex and Hayden put a lot of thought into the dinner they had for Willa. They had luckily gotten a reservation at her favorite Italian restaurant in the city and inside, a few mutual friends sat at a table. Willa smiled at all of them, hugging each one individually and thanking them for coming. Whenever she spoke to someone, she always made them feel like they were the only one in the room and gave them her undivided attention. She took a seat next to Alex and ordered a fruity drink, which she only ordered on a special occasion, tonight evidently being one. Her laughter filled the room as genuine happiness flowed through her body for the first time in a while. She didn't feel like she was mourning the loss of a friend, or even a lover, in that moment. She was eating some bread when she heard a throat clear and two bodies had presented themselves at the table. She knew the sound from anywhere, she could clock it anywhere she went. She kept her eyes on the table for a moment before looking up and meeting the eyes of the two people who had betrayed her.
There, Harry and Anna stood. His hand resting on her lower back, making Willa think of all the times he did that to her. She shifted uncomfortably in the seat while Alex took the lead in the conversation, "Oh, hi guys. I don't remember inviting you." She spoke through a forced smile while fumbling with her phone to see if she had made a mistake and accidentally told Anna. Anna was her sister but she was able to know what happened was wrong and Anna had hurt her best friend, who was like another sister to the two of them. They all went to school together and she couldn't process how her sister could do this and especially keep it a secret. Harry looked at Alex, a bright smile on his face, "No, you didn't. We were just coming to get dinner and I saw all of you sitting here so I thought we'd come say hi and congratulate Willa on her promotion." His hand moved to rest on her shoulder and rub it lightly. No matter how hurt Willa was, she still gave a soft "Thank you" all the while refusing to look up at Harry. How could she look at the two people who hurt her the most on one of the happiest nights. One of their mutual friends, Ciara, offered the two to sit and eat with them. Alex, Hayden and Willa all froze up and as Alex was going to protest, Anna spoke up, "Why, I think we'd love to. Wouldn't we, baby?" The words falling off her tongue hit Willa like a bus. They were venomous. Harry nodded and took a seat next to Willa while Anna had to make her way to a different side of the table due to only two seats being open.
Willa sat there, very tightly gripping Alex's hand under the table. She knew she wouldn't be able to avoid them forever but the look of them together just hurt. She hated that she was so affected by the fact they were there. Maybe it was the fact Harry was sitting so close to her and his body heat was radiating onto her, "At least I know why Willa hasn't been able to answer her texts. She's too busy getting her promotion." Willa hummed in response and gave a fake laugh, "What can I say? I just am so busy." Her voice trailed off while she kept her eyes on the table in front of her. Harry could notice she was upset and rather than stay quiet about it, he leaned in and whispered, "Did I do something?" The four simple words were enough to knock some sort of air out of her, being as it was hard to ignore them in person like she had been over text. She looked at Harry for the first time, his beautiful green eyes staring at her with some concern in them. There was no words she wanted to say, she had no words. She just looked away and let go of Alex's hand while saying quietly enough for only Harry to hear, "I don't know, Harry. What did you do?" She looked up at the waiter, who had come over and ordered herself Chicken Alfredo. Everyone ordered and the chatter started again.
Dinner went by as smoothly as it could. Harry kept trying to get answers out of Willa to see if she was mad and assuming by her reaction she was upset. Harry never intended to hurt his best friend and he just couldn't figure out what happened. As everyone was leaving, Willa gave everyone another hug and thanked them for coming once again. She even gave Anna a hug and last was Harry. He knew he would be rejected if he just assumed she'd hug him so his arms wrapped her in a tight bear hug. She wanted to cry in that moment. Whether it was from comfort or sadness, she didn't know at all. She very hesitantly hugged back, "Thank you for coming, even if you weren't invited. It was nice to see you." She spoke gently and unwrapped herself from his arms. The action sent Harry on his way to Anna, who stood there talking to Alex and Hayden. The sight of the two of them together hurt her more than she could explain but she couldn't deny how beautiful they were together.
A hand on Willa's shoulder interrupted her from her thoughts when a hand was placed on her shoulder. She turned around and saw their waiter standing there. He was incredibly tall and definitely good looking. She gave a sweet smile and he smiled down at her, "Hi, um, i'm Avian. I know this could be completely out of pocket but I just wanted to know if I could have your number? I found you so gorgeous from the second I looked at you and just had to ask." Willa could feel her cheeks blaring a deep red shade while she got her phone out and handed it to Avian, "Of course! I'd be stupid to say no. I'm Willa." The tall boys brown eyes sparkled as he took the phone and typed in his number and texted himself, "I just had to. I haven't seen anyone prettier. I would've been the stupid one to let you walk out." Willa giggled and looked at her phone, "Well, i'm glad you came up to me. I'll text you later, Avian." She smiled up at him and walked over to her group of friends.
Little did she know, Harry watched and heard the whole interaction. He could feel his heart beating fast in his chest. No chance am I jealous? I have Anna, he thought to himself, I'm just being protective. Even though he had said that, he felt as though maybe he was lying to himself. The way Willa was smiling was the same smile she had in the club after they had exchanged numbers. It was one of excitement. Harry just looked at her and Willa met his gaze. A sad look passed through her eyes as she quickly looked away. She didn't want to keep giving him the time of day, it was time to move on.
At least she hopefully could move on.
