Fake it

"I don't say a word"

Fire on Fire, Sam Smith

Taehyung put me on the spot there. I had no idea what to say. I opened my mouth, trying to get a sound, but quickly closed it. I started unconsciously biting my lip, while searching my brain for a sufficient answer.

The table was completely silent now. It's amazing how just one simple question could shut everyone up in a second.

"Taehyung, you shouldn't ask questions like that," Namjoon was the first one to start talking. Now everybody turned to Taehyung, who looked completely lost. The poor kid probably didn't realize what he had asked himself.

"I'm sorry, sorry," he uttered quickly to his brothers and then turned to me. "I am sorry, Eunha. I shouldn't have asked," he bowed slightly.

"Ah, it's okay," I told him kindly. "Sorry, I didn't answer your question."

"No, no, you shouldn't answer questions like that," Taehyung looked flustered.

"It's alright," I said once again. I just kept smiling throughout this whole encounter, as if I was not bothered by his question.

The table became silent. The atmosphere was no longer relaxed, the awkwardness was still in the air.

I picked up the utensils and started slowly cutting the steak into little pieces. Never knew that cutting meat was so interesting. I honestly felt like throwing up, because my nerves kept tickling my stomach.

"So, Eunha," Mr. Kim cleared his throat, starting a conversation. "I heard that you and Jungkook are in one class."

Jungkook looked up from his food at the mention of his name.

"Oh, yes, we are," I nodded.

"Jungkook often talks about how smart you are," Mr. Kim informed me with a smile. Jungkook started coughing, as he choked on the food that he was chewing. "And Jimin often complains that you scored the first place on the results board," the owner of the house ratted his sons out.

The results board... I hated that thing. After the exam season, our school would compare the scores of every student across all the years and then rank them. Of course, the students with the highest scores went to the top. We also had boards for individual years, but the general results board caught more attention. The school administration would even put it on the school website for the parents to see.

"Dad, I never do that," Jimin whined.

"Okay, okay, he doesn't complain. It actually motivates him a lot," his dad smiled.

"Oh yeah, I remember when that happened last time. He said something like 'I've got to try harder' and then he ran to his room to study," Hoseok tried to mimic Jimin's voice and tone. A series of laughs were heard around the table, while Jimin started pouting.

Wow, I didn't know that it had such an effect on him. I thought he hated me for that.

Jimin was one of the best students in our school. We would often compete for first place on the board.

It was very important for me to stay in the first place. I still remember the first time Jimin was leading the board and my father found out. He was raging. The fact that I wasn't first and furthermore have lost to a Kim, sent him overboard. Just remembering that night made me feel sick and I wanted to run to the bathroom, but contained myself. I'll do it later anyway.

"But he is usually in the first place. I feel like it's me, who needs to try harder," I chuckled quietly.

"Do you like to study?" Namjoon suddenly asked me.
