Lumine's POV

When Mr. Albedo, our homeroom teacher, announced a field trip, everyone was excited. When the day of the field trip came, I was panicking. It was really early, earlier than school normally started. We needed partners and I wanted to ask Xiao if he wanted to be mine, but it would be embarrassing. I turned to ask Aether, but he was already with Venti. "Xingqiu, do you wanna-" I stopped when I realized he was with Chongyun. Amber was with Barbara, Xiangling was with Xinyan, Bennett was with Razor, Gorou was with Thoma, and everyone else, I didn't know. Xiao was the only one left. Mr. Albedo approached me and eyed Xiao wearily. "You're with him."

Xiao slid into the bus seat next to me. I tried looking everywhere but him. "Alright class. The drive should be about four or five hours, so get comfortable. And we'll be at the museum for a while afterwards." Mr. Albedo said, giving the bus driver a slight nod. It was still dark out, it was so early. How'd we all manage to get permission from our parents for this? Xiao glanced at me. "You look worn." he commented. I recoiled. "It's five a.m." I replied, though I admitted it too. I tried to avoid eye contact with Xiao and looked around for other things, listening in on some conversations. Aether and Venti were both dozing and so were Amber and Barbara. Xiangling was asleep too, and Xinyan was writing down what looked like lyrics for a song next to her. Bennett was rambling on and on about his adventure team while Razor listened patiently with an occasional nod or "hmmmm". Gorou and Thoma were chatting quietly about things that I couldn't make out. I was close friends with Xingqiu and Chongyun, so I knew they wouldn't mind if I eavesdropped or chimed in at all. Plus, I knew that Chongyun and Xingqiu were like, boyfriends now. They'd both confessed already, something I wish I had the courage to say to Xiao. I glanced over my shoulder and observed the two for a minute.

"X-Xingqiu, are you– Qiu? Xingqiu?" Chongyun waved his hand in front of Xingqiu's face. Xingqiu, who had been slumped against the window with his book starting to slip out of his hand, opened an eye. As soon as he saw Chongyun staring at him, dropped his book in surprise. "I- I'm sorry!" he said anxiously, picking up his book. "You sleep at all last night?" Chongyun asked. Xingqiu shook his head, his expression visibly sleep deprived. Chongyun sighed. "Xingqiu, look, I know you're stressed out and all, but you've gotta get some rest." he said. Xingqiu nodded, yawning mutely and leaning against the window. "Exactly. You're tired." Chongyun insisted. "Because... I can't sleep... with the... noise in..." Xingqiu's eyes fell shut and his head fell so that it was buried in Chongyun's shoulder. Chongyun turned bright red. "You're not pranking me, right?" he stammered. Xingqiu's only response was quiet snoring. I could tell he wasn't faking. Chongyun's face turned even a darker shade of red. He spotted me. I think I was staring. "Help, I don't know what to do..." he whispered. I just smiled at him and glanced at the book that had almost slipped out of Xingqiu's hand. Chongyun mustered a weak smile and nodded, whispering a weak "thank-you".

Along the way, I must've fallen asleep. When I woke up, I heard snickering. Xiao and I had our heads touching and he, too, was asleep. Practically everyone was. Even Mr. Albedo. But Aether was taking pictures of me. I sliced my hand over my throat. "Cut it out, you asshole." I whispered angrily. He nudged Venti accidentally, but he stopped. Venti stirred and grumbled in protest but laughed when he saw me and Xiao. Xiao blinked sleepily and Venti and Aether pretended to be chatting. The small amount of commotion was enough to wake Bennett, Razor, Chongyun, and Xiangling. Xiao muttered a curse and pulled away from me, leaning against the window. I sighed. I knew he didn't like me back.

Chongyun's POV

Xingqiu's breath was warm on my cheek. I rested his book in my lap. I couldn't remember the last time he slept in front of me. He was pretty stressed out about getting everything organized for his mom's funeral and her death itself was pretty traumatizing for him since he saw it happen. I was just surprised he wasn't falling asleep in class because he said that he couldn't sleep without nightmares or just couldn't sleep at all. He slept most of the way to the museum, waking up occasionally, but murmuring something and almost instantly falling back asleep. When we neared the museum, I laid the back of my hand across his cheek and whispered, "Qiu... Xingqiu, wake up. We're here." He made a small sound of protest in the back of his throat and opened his eyes, yawning. "Mmmmm?" he murmured. "We're practically here." I told him, handing him his book. He lifted his head off my shoulder and yawned. "Mmm. Kay. Thanks." he mumbled sleepily.

The built up anticipation for the field trip quickly diminished for most. Not many people were at all interested in the museum. Most were just excited for the talk time on the bus. Halfway into the tour through the museum, Mr. Albedo stopped walking. He handed us each a sheet of paper. "I forgot to do this earlier. It's second semester, and I promised that you could pick our roommates. '' he said. It was literally coming out the way I predicted it; everyone had written down their bus partner's name except for Lumine and Xiao. Lumine was with Barbara and Amber and Xiao was with Bennett and Razor since there was an odd number. Then it hit me. I was gonna share a room with Xingqiu. My first thought and impulse was to panic. After a minute or two of that, I remembered how stressed he was and maybe I could help him sleep or something. His last roommate, Thoma, had tried, but he told me that Xingqiu looked tired but just couldn't sleep no matter what he tried. He also said Xingqiu spent most of his time in the library. Though I appreciate Thoma's effort, and he's a good guy, but I wasn't sure if he had enough of Xingqiu's trust yet. Plus, I think he had a thing for Gorou. Not sure.

The museum was only partially interesting. It was an art museum, that was the only reason why. If it were something like a bunch of ancient documents from the US, I'd be bored out of my mind. Xiao looked surprisingly interested, though, like Xingqiu and I always, kept his mouth shut about it. Most of the class didn't really pay attention, chatting, and just followed Mr. Albedo around. I was continuously checking the clock on my phone to see how long it would be until we left, and if we were being honest, the bus ride was longer than the museum tour itself. There was a quilt hanging on the wall with approximately like... 200 squares sewn into it. It was big for a quilt. I wouldn't consider it a quilt.

The ride back to the school building was about the same as the ride to the museum. Everybody was doing their own thing or talking with the person next to them. It was a funny coincidence that Xiao and Lumine were partners; it wasn't voluntary but not obligatory either. It all just kinda happened that way. Xiangling would probably say it was destiny; she was a big believer in that stuff. But I knew that Lumine really liked Xiao and I was willing to give her any advice possible to help her tell him.
