Chapter 2 ~ Kai Colburn

My alarm wakes me up at 6, giving me enough time to shower before breakfast.
I step into my bathroom and turn on the shower, letting the water run before going in.
"Ugh, that's freezing!" I jump back and yell at my cousin, "Cameron! Get out the shower!"
"No! You get out the shower!" He yells back.
Ah, this takes me back.
Eventually I decide that a cold shower is better than no shower, so I just freeze to death, blowdry my hair and then put on my clothes. I wear a white 'Nothing To Wear' crop top with my high-waisted shorts and my maroon Vans. I tie my hair back into a loose ponytail, letting some curly strands fall out, and throw on some light makeup.
"Hey Maya. I love your hair today." I smile, admiring her curls and we walk downstairs together.
She smiles too, "Thank you. I love your outfit."
"Good morning ladies. Carsen, did you enjoy your shower?" Cameron smirks.
"Yeah, ice cold water is my favorite!" I sit opposite him and roll my eyes.
He hands me a sheet of paper, "The principle gave me your schedule. We're only in two classes together but I'm sure you'll be fine."
"Alright, thanks." I read through my schedule: physics, geography, social studies, etcetera. Overall, a pretty lame day.
We eat breakfast and aunt Libby heads off to work just before the school bus arrives. I grab my backpack from the bottom of the stairs and follow my cousins onto the bus. Cameron and Maya both go to sit with their friends but each invite me to sit with them. Cam's friends are intimidatingly handsome, so I pass on them and look over at Maya's friends. They're a couple years younger than me so I decide to sit with them.
"Guys, this is my older cousin Carsen. She's from Arizona. She's new." Maya grins and introduces me to them.
"Nice to meet you." One says unsurely and they all look pretty scared of me.
I scoot away a little and stare at the floor for pretty much the entire journey.
When we get to school, I stay behind Cameron but stay hidden from his gorgeous friends.
"Have a good first day. I'll save you a seat in math." Cameron gives me a quick hug and then rushes off with his pals.
"283. Locker 283. 281, 283, 28--" I look down at my schedule to find my locker number but hit my side on someone's locker, which closes it onto their head.
"Shit! I'm so sorry, are you okay?" I say to them.
They chuckle, "I'm fine. My locker's always in the way. Hey, you're new. I'm Kyla, by the way." She sticks out her hand and I shake it.
"Carsen. Nice to meet you, Kyla."
Kyla smiles, "What's your first class? Wouldn't want you to be on your own."
"Physics with Miss Osborne." I tell her.
"Yay! Me too!"
Only a few minutes in and I've already made a friend, "Great! At least I won't be by mysel-- hey, who's he?" I get distracted by a physically perfect boy standing by his locker in front of me.
"Oh, that's Cameron. He's so hot and he has a six pack like wow-"
I cut her off and stick my tongue out at him, "Ew, no. Not him. The boy near him. Cameron's my cousin." I laugh.
"Oh. I'm so sorry! That other boy is Kai Colburn, AKA the 'bad boy'. I get it, he's cute, but don't fall for him. He won't do you any good." She explains.
"Before I develop a huge crush on him, you're not related to him, are you?"
She rolls her eyes and laughs, "Yes, actually. He's my brother. My name's Kyla Colburn."
The bell rings and I follow Kyla to physics, "Well, you can totally introduce me to him later."
"Only if you give me Cameron's number." She blackmails me.
"Deal."
***
"Well that sucked ass." Kyla sighs as we exit the physics class.
I check my schedule for my 2nd period lesson, "I've only had one class and I think I've already found my least favorite teacher. I have geography next, with Mr Hartman."
Kyla's eyes widen, "Yes, me too! Mr Hartman is the best: he literally just sits at his desk and drinks coffee the whole lesson. Plus, he's practically deaf so you can talk all you want. It's like a free period."
"Awesome! Is Cameron in that class? I need to get consent for giving you his number." I say, even though I had a feeling he would say no.
Kyla nods and shows me to the classroom. I see Cam sitting near the back and I sit in the seat next to him.
"Hey cuz! You made any friends yet?" We do our handshake and I point over to Kyla.
"That's Kyla there at the front. I accidentally shut her head in her locker but we totally hit it off after." I laugh when Kyla turns and smiles, staring at Cameron and attempting to be flirty.
I whisper to him, "I think she has a little crush on you. Can I give her your number?"
"Um, I'll pass, thanks. Just be careful if you're gonna be friends with her. Her brother, Kai, will just mess you up if you're an easy target. At the moment, you're pretty vulnerable." He informs. What, and avoid the most handsome boy I've ever come across in my entire life? No thanks, Cameron.
Seconds later, Mr Hartman strolls in with his Venti cup of Starbucks and relaxes into his desk chair, "Okay, hormonal teenagers. Today we're continuing with our assignments." He claps his hands but spills some coffee on his shirt. The class snigger at him struggling, "Start working now."
"Work with me, Carsen. I'll explain it." Cameron gets out a large sheet of colored paper with information and pictures stuck on it. I read the title, 'Resources & Sustainability'.
He tells me what I have to do and I get started. Whilst he reads up on some more facts, I write a note with Cameron's number on.
'Here. He said no but this is revenge for him making me take a cold shower. After 3rd period it's lunch, you can introduce me to Kai. That was our deal :)'
"Excuse me, can you pass this to Kyla?" I ask the girl sitting in front of me. She takes the note and hands it to Kyla.
Cam pulls me back, "Carsen, were you even listening to anything I just said?"
***
Third period goes by a lot quicker than second and I met Kyla in the lunch hall with her other friends.
"Carsen, this is Harper and this is Avery," She points to her friends and they smile and let me sit down.
"Nice to meet you, Carsen! Kyla told us you're Cameron Boyce's cousin." Harper says.
Avery eats her sandwich, "Everyone in your family is so pretty!" She groans and I laugh.
"Thank you. Kyla, it's time to-" I get cut off by someone sitting in between Kyla and I.
"Hey hey, little sis!" They say and my heart skips a beat, "Who's the newbie?"
He flicks his golden hair and my heart does black flips in my chest, "H-hi, I'm Carsen. And you're gorgeous."
Great. First impression? More like worst impression.
He chuckles and we make eye contact, "Beautiful name for a beautiful girl. I'm Kai, Kyla's brother." I blush and the other girls roll their eyes.
"You're cute, I'd like to see you again. May I have your number?" Kai asks, flipping his hair again and getting out his phone.
"Mhm." I almost choke and I shakily type my number into his contacts.
Kyla pushes him away and he winks at me, "Bye Kai!" She extends each word.
He leaves and Harper and Avery stare at Kyla.
"Relax," she sighs, "I've warned her about him."
"I know you think he's hot and all, but just watch out." Harper says seriously.
Avery nods in agreement, "She's right, Carsen. He'll play you like a symphony."
Even if I didn't date Kai and fall these tricks he apparently plays, we could at least be good friends.
I turn around when I feel as if someone was staring at me. I look to the table behind us and see Cameron glaring at me. He shakes his head and returns to his lunch. Like he knows anything about Kai.
***
"How was your first day, Carsen?" Uncle Victor asks as we get into his car.
I sit between Cam and Maya and we start to drive away from school, "It's was cool. I made some new friends."
"Um, dad, where are we going?" Maya asks when he drives straight past the house.
"We're to collect your brother's new car," Victor grins with pride.
"You can drive!?" I stare at Cameron with wide eyes and he nods, "Man, time flies. Last time I saw you drive was when you were 11 and you crashed my Barbie truck into a tree."
We laugh and I give him a hug, "Agh, I'm so proud!"

A few minutes later, we arrive at the showroom and excitedly head inside. I'm terrible with cars, and by this I mean that they don't interest me and I know nothing about them. The boys speak to the salesmen about the car and Cameron goes to collect it.
'Hey cutie! Nice meeting you today.'
I got a text from a hot boy, and I wasn't the one to spam-text him first!
I type a reply before Cameron drives his new car into the parking lot.
"Um, Carsen? We're going now." Maya snaps me out of my little texting world and look up at the new car.
Cam opens the passenger seat door and gestures for me to sit down, "You coming?"
I get inside and smile, "Let's go."
We follow Victor, Libby and Maya back home and I have to admit, I feel bad for texting Kai the whole time. It's worth it, we arrange to see each other again at the weekend.
"Stop texting and talk to me." Cam pouts.
I jump and turn off my phone, "Oh, yeah, sorry."
"Who're you talking to anyway?" He asks.
Screw the thing about not lying to family.
"Don't worry, it's just my new friend Harper."
He pulls into the driveway, "Cool, cool. Glad you made some new friends."
We lock the car and head indoors. I give Cienna a stroke before taking a seat in the kitchen for dinner.
Throughout the time we eat, Cameron doesn't stop staring at me. Earlier on today when I was talking to Kai, he didn't seem too pleased.
He definitely knows something. And I intend on finding out what that is.
