Betrayal

Prologue

Hazel's POV

Twelve years ago, my mother was found dead in the river. She worked as a nurse on the maternity ward at our local hospital. She said it was just another one of the joys of her life, as watching new life be brought into this world was definitely cause for celebration. My mother had a heart of gold but as we all know the world is not just full of sunshine and rainbows. It was on one of these grey cloudy days she witnessed a horrid occurrence; a mother lost her life as well as the baby she was birthing. The police found this to be the cause of her "hysteria." They investigated for weeks but couldn't turn up any more evidence in her death. It was ruled a suicide, cut and clear. It was such a mar to our family name as my papa put it. It tore my father up more than it did anyone. He loved my mother more than life itself and he always made sure I knew that.

I only learned the gruesome details of my mother's death later in my life as I was only five years old when it happened. My mother was just 25 years young, a long life ahead of her. Its selfish but I will never forgive my father for her passing. He could have done something. He should have. Why didn't he see something was wrong with my mom's mental health? Not long after my mother's death, my nana followed her to her grave. Within a week I lost my mother and grandma, whom were my only family I had a relationship with. Shortly after, my dad moved her father in and then he just disappeared for six months. I was told he was on a business trip. I was oblivious to the forces that were truly behind my mother's death. It would remain that way until my 18th birthday. The weeks days up to my freedom were some of the most awful, eye-opening weeks I have ever experienced after my mother's death. Did you know that supernatural creatures exist? Pure evil and malice exist? But also, light and love. Life is not all black and white and after learning the things I did my life would never be the same.
