When I first met Bruno, it was weird, awkward, and irritating. I hated looking at his face, or even hearing him talk. I made sure to avoid him at all costs, wanting to just enjoy my friendship with Pepa then face him again. Pepa usually didn't hang around him as much, and I usually never had to see him.
Our classes were over in the small school down the corner of town, and usually we'd walk home from school with happy smiles and arms jointed. Pepa usually complained about homework, and I laughed along with her. Bruno never joined us, until one day he tapped my shoulder.
"Oye, ¿sabes dónde está Pepa? " He asked softly, twiddling his fingers. I scoffed a bit, packing up my bags at the end of the day. He stood there waiting for me to finish, shifting his weight on his feet.
I smiled up towards him, trying to be nice despite my slight annoyance to him trying to follow me all day. "No sé, she ran into the bathroom and she's been there." I explained, pointing to the door.
Suddenly, he sat upright and dashed out the door. What? Getting curious, I followed him and was him standing outside the girls bathroom. Bruno coughed, turning to me. "Y-you should... uhm.. I don't wanna get in trouble, y'know? lo siento. "
I could hear the loud cries from the bathroom and grabbed him instead, dragging him inside to see Pepa's huge rain cloud. There was chocolate stains dripping down her pretty yellow dress, her desperately trying to clean it out.
"Pepa? ¿Qué sucedió? You okay??" I asked, moving towards her as the rain instantly poured over me. Her head craned up instantly, eyes wide. Then, she howled and hugged me-
"They hate me!!! Does he think I'm weird?! Argh, I'm so dumb!! Y/n!!! HELP!!! B-bruno?"
He waved at us, walking over to her slowly. Suprisingly, most of the worry left him and he seemed determined to help. "hermana... it's okay, I'm sure he's worried for you instead."
Pepa rolled her eyes, shoving me back and nearly flopping me over- Bruno caught me in time, watching her tantrum turn into rain clouds. She tried grabbing more paper towels, wetting it to try and get the stain out.
"This is what I was fearing, she'll tear the village up just by this." Whispered the boy behind me, shaking his head. I leaned towards him, talking quieter so Pepa couldn't hear. "What? Did she spill on herself?"
"Yes. Precisely, I caught it in a vision and when I saw it happen, I knew what was gonna happen." He replied, voice softer then I thought. Usually it was rugged comments to keep me away, but from the look of it... he seemed concerned for her.
Once she realized she really couldn't, a louder cry left her. I held onto my jacket, a bit soaked but I'm sure it could help cover up. Pepa ran up to hug me, I placed off my jacket and put it on her shoulders.
"Here, Pepa. Let's go and just send you home to change, okay?" I wiped her wet cheek, thumb over her cheekbone. She smiled, the rain finally clearing. I helped her hang the jacket over her shoulders, ushering her out.
Bruno followed us, carrying her bag. Outside the door, I spotted another boy.
Felix. He was clearly worried, running over to Pepa and cupping her hands. "Oh, gracias a Dios. You just ran off and I was so worried!"
She smiled awkwardly, her cheeks turning bright red. I smirked, knowing her long crush on him. "Yeah, that was dumb, right? Hahaha! Sorry."
I stood by Bruno, watching them interact. Felix shook his head, fixing up the jacket and looking up at her. "I thought it was cute, Pepa. Te veré más tarde." He waved goodbye, smiling up at me. I waved too, nudging the other guy next to me. Bruno lifted up his lanky hand, looking away.
We all walked out together, Pepa further introducing me to Bruno, her brother. We kept her happy just incase, despite me already dripping with water and freezing cold. The walk to the Madrigals house didn't take long, and she rushed in happily. Bruno stood outside, watching me walk away before shouting,
"Wait, uhm! Th-thank you. Thank you! Gracias." Bruno was attempting to take his ruana off him, it slamming on top of me and nearly knocking me off his feet. He turned red, rushing over to apologize and help me into it. Patting down the soft cotton, he glanced up at me.
"Without your help, something dangerous could of happened."
"So a vision, huh? Your Bruno. Can I get mine?"
He gulped, glancing up at me with glossy eyes. Almost like he was fearing that response. I knew the rumors pretty well, so one way or another I'd get a vision.
"Okay, just.... don't get mad at me for it... please." Was he scared I'd tell Pepa? I mean it depends, because I never really liked Bruno much.
"Whatever vision shows its not your fault, okay?" I tried to comfort, waving goodbye. He lit up, me seeing a smile I've never seen before.
Maybe he isn't so bad at all. His ruana is comfy at least.
