Seoul, South Korea
Park Sunghoon had only been in love once and that will be the last time.
He first saw Love inside a restaurant after coming back from university, laughing at something his father said. Love had a smile that showed all his porcelain teeth and a face both beautiful and handsome without being overbearing. He was lighting up the whole room with just his mere presence. From a distance, they locked eyes and Sunghoon saw those orbs sparkle like stars. The only thought in his mind at that moment was that he looked like a puppy.
The moment was broken when his mother ushered him to meet another son of a businessman. As they mingled around his focus was never on the conversation. He was unconsciously looking for Love that seemed to be lost in the sea of people.
Jay had whispered to him before that event at the restaurant, "Your future has been set on a rock, man. Too bad you won't find the love of your life."
Oh, how wrong he was.
As the night ended, he never got to know Love's name, but he had engraved his face on his mind. He will find him again.
Brisbane, Australia
There was a distinct feeling of nausea hovering over his shoulders. All his regrets were coming down to him. There was bile rising up his throat; it's nothing like the confidence and lightness on his toes when entering the ice rink. Beads of sweat decorated his temple like some jewelry from a dollar store. The groom, Sunghoon, keeps looking at the door and the windows of the four-cornered room with people wearing formal attire and fussing over him.
"Dude, stop sweating! You're ruining your dress shirt," hissed his best man, Jay. He didn't manage to reply as the event manager yelled for everyone to be in their place.
As he walked down the aisle to the altar, his features relaxed, mimicking an emotionless statue of a man carved from stone. He was handsome, he knows. All eyes were on him, just like when he was performing a program to amaze and awe the audience. His pace was slow and calm, just as instructed when they practiced.
If he doubled back and ran, he'll be able to escape. He will run out of this cathedral no matter how his mother said it was the most beautiful here in Australia. He will hail a cab and go on from there. He'll put his trust in Jay to send him straight back to Korea or somewhere his family won't find him. Sunghoon will forget he was ever a proud Park and live as a farmer like those in movies. He'll be poor, but at the very least he was happy. If there is really someone watching over him from above, maybe that someone will align the stars and let him meet Love again.
Sunghoon didn't do any of that, much to Jay's relief. He reached the altar without running back towards the entrance. He waited for his husband-to-be, accepting his fate as a pawn in his parents' game of chess.
He looked over all the people present on his wedding day, they smiled at him, and a few even had tears marring their faces. His father nodded at him with recognition, that was new. So, the old man did have a bit of humanity in him.
The big oak doors opened again revealing a man dressed in white. He was a few inches shorter than Sunghoon, but no one can deny he was a head-turner. He walked with grace while holding a simple bouquet of autumn flowers. Every step this person took was a ringing bell of finality in Sunghoon's ears. He grew near the altar that Sunghoon can see his face. At a distance, he looked like a prince, but a few feet away from him he was a fae. His pale neck was adorned by a silver choker necklace circling its entirety. There were white pearls attached to thin brunette strands of his hair. This person's lips have a tinge of pink, and his eyes were brown marbles holding the universe. Love was truly one of a kind and soon to be Sunghoon's.
They both stepped onto the threshold and soon were asked, "Do you, Sunghoon Park, take Jaeyun Sim as your lawfully wedded husband?" Jaeyun was his name. It's a nice name.
"I do," Sunghoon replied.
"Do you, Jaeyun Sim, take Sunghoon Park as your lawfully wedded husband?"
Jaeyun looked up to him and Sunghoon felt Jaeyun's hands shaking barely. He caressed his thumbs over the knuckles of the soft hands he's holding. He smiled a little at the gesture and said, "I do."
They were asked to kiss. This was a special moment for this is the first time Sunghoon will kiss a person with the intention of keeping them. His lips neared and closed the distance between them. It ended as soon as it came, but inside that bubble of time Sunghoon had promised himself and Jaeyun: All my life till my last breath will be spent making you the happiest.
Their first dance was as romantic as it can get, Sunghoon had asked first, seeing Jaeyun watching couples waltzing the floor. His offered palm was accepted. As they go through practiced steps taught since they were young living away from each other and unbeknownst to the future they're about to head into, they both saw this opportunity to gaze at each other and maybe answer the floating question inside their heads.
Sunghoon was the one who spoke first in heavily accented English, "Do you know Korean?" He opted to speak of a light topic as he twirled his partner.
"Yes and I also know who you are." Sunghoon chuckled at the reply.
"Who am I then?''
"I think you were that ice skater; you were cute when you were a kid. You can call me Jake if you want," he answered.
"Now?" Jake looked at him with question in his eyes. "You said I was cute back then, well, how about now?"
The other giggled and said, "You are handsome."
Sunghoon marveled at the precious sight in front of him. Jake's cheeks were dusted pink, and eyes crinkled in mirth.
"I thought so too."
