OLIVER FLETCHER
PAST
JULY 2019
I was currently on the way to my dads, having rung him last night he was more than happy to have me over so that we could have dinner. In a way I just wanted to see him to talk things over, especially after what my mum said about him.Deep down I needed to know what he really thought, why they really broke up and if it was because of me. I believed Max when he said it wasn't, what could I have done to make them break up? They were the ones who had me, I didn't have a choice in being here.
My knuckles raise to my dad's front door, knocking loudly before clearing my throat and looking down to my outfit quickly. Before I had the chance to straighten out my jacket the door opens, Kerry's face welcomes me instantly as she grins.
"Hey Oli," she says as she moves away from the door. "How are you?"
"I'm good, thanks Kerry." I nod once. "How are you?"
She hums and beckons me in. "Good thank you, it's so good to see you. You must be so pleased that university is over for the summer, this time off to try and relax."
I step into their house, the smell of freshly baked cakes and soft lavender. Their house always felt like home even though I never lived here. Kerry was the kindest person to ever grace this Earth and in a way I'm grateful that she's my step mother.
"Yeah," I smile back at her as I walk through to the kitchen. "So happy to have some time off. University is no joke."
"I bet it's not," she laughs gently before waltzing over to the fridge. "Would you like a drink?"
"Yeah please," I say gratefully as I perch on the edge of the kitchen island.
"We have freshly squeezed orange juice," she says as she pulls a plastic carton from the fridge.
Of course you do. I think in my head.
"Yeah that's great, thanks Kerry." I say as she nods and begins to pour a cup.
Footsteps ring in my ears from behind. "Son," I hear as I turn around.
My dad emerges from the stairs and I jump up from the stool to give him a hug. "It's so good to see you dad," I breathe out as I wrap my arms around him.
His arms fold around me tightly and hold me in place. "You too Oli," he mumbles into my shoulder. "We need to see each other more."
I nod as we pull away and I smile up to him. He was aging now but he still looks incredible for his age, the wrinkles and the greying hair somewhat looked good on him. I'm sure that Kerry could agree, she married him.
