A/N: hey y'all, it's been awhile! In all honesty, it takes a lot of thinking to come up with good story ideas these days. Here's one I just cooked up, for some reason I feel like my writing isn't as good as it used to be but I'm still pretty confident in the story itself. Please enjoy!

NOTE: this story takes place around the end of season 2, well before season 3. Also for purpose of the plot, Melanie did not go off to boarding school in this story. Instead, she just attends an elite private school in Seattle.

CONTENT WARNING: mention of sex and occasional swearing but nothing graphic.

The morning of Tuesday, June 13th was just like any other morning in Seattle, Washington. In the central part of the big city, Carly Shay was getting dressed for school in the bedroom of her 8th floor apartment in Bushwell Plaza. She'd tried on four dresses so far and wasn't satisfied with a single one. However, it was one of the last few weeks of the year it would be warm enough to wear a dress, and she was already dreading the long five months it would be too cold outside to consider putting one on for even a minute.

She finally settled on one after spending 27 minutes in front of the mirror, trying to convince herself that every dress was the dress. The one she picked out was a favourite of hers, and she'd never had a bad day in it. Sighing to herself and throwing a comfortable jean jacket over top, she trotted down the stairs to meet her brother.

"Finally!" Spencer declared dramatically.

"I couldn't decide on a dress!" Carly's voice squeaked up an octave.

"You have too much clothes. Get rid of a dress or twelve and BAM! problem solved" Spencer thought aloud.

"Yeah, that'll happen" Carly chuckled sarcastically.

The brunette later walked through the doors of Ridgeway High School, a smoothie in one hand, her history textbook clutched to her chest in the other. Carly rounded the corner and was surprised to see Sam wasn't at her locker. Carly unlocked her own and placed her textbook back inside, trading it for her first period chemistry book. She closed her locker and turned around to see Freddie standing right behind her.

Startled, her eyes went wide in surprise and she fumbled back slightly into her locker to put some space between them.

"Sorry, didn't mean to scare you" Freddie apologized, but failed to refrain from laughing a little.

"You didn't" Carly lied, as the two of them began the walk to first period together.

"You see Sam yet?" Freddie asked her.

"No" Carly responded, as her mind wandered to the chapter quiz that she had 4th period, which was right after lunch today.

"Weird" Freddie responded as they filed through the doorway of their chemistry class.

"What's weird about it? She's only on time like maybe twice a month" Carly declared, as she took her seat next to Freddie.

"Yeah, but she was supposed to meet me in the cafeteria this morning before class" he confessed.

"Sam agreed to come to school early? Are you really surprised she didn't show up?" Carly rolled her eyes knowingly.

"Normally I wouldn't be but she begged me to help her review for our pre-calculus exam. Apparently she's one bad grade away from having to go to summer school" Freddie explained.

Carly opened her mouth to respond but before she could, their chemistry teacher stood up from his desk and began his 8am lecture on the structure of carbohydrates.

Later that afternoon, Carly rummaged through her locker in search of her pearphone moments after the bell rang for lunch. Realizing she must've forgot it at home after the dress commotion, she slammed her locker shut with defeat and made her way to the cafeteria. She scanned the room for Freddie, Sam, Wendy or Gibby. Her eyes found Wendy, sitting at a table with several girls Carly didn't know very well. A moment later, she spotted Gibby eating his lunch at an otherwise empty table across the room.
