I wrote this in like 5 minutes so don't judge:
Masons POV
It's burning hot, none of my friends will answer my texts, and i'm bored to death. My family and I are going on vacation in a few hours, there is a light at the end of the tunnel after all! Or so it seems, we're going to my dads' old high school friends farm. Whoopidy fucking do. But the best part is, there will be no internet connection, no cell service, and no actual people except my family and Joe. Best summer ever 10 out of 10. "MASON, ARE YOU READY TO GO? IF YOU AREN'T DOWN HERE IN THE NEXT 2 MINUTES WE'RE LEAVING WITHOUT YOU!" Although I would much rather they leave me here, I know it's no an option, it's time. "Yeah i'm ready." I mumbled as I grabbed my suitcase and ran down the stairs. I walked out the door and helped my mom with packing up the suitcases. I sat down in the back of the car next to my brother Brody. My mom double checked if we brought everything and my dad started up the car. Well, I might as well use up whats left of the battery on my phone before we lose access to the internet.
3 hours later
We've been driving for like 10 hours now and it's hot as fuck. Unfortunately the AC in our car decided to maul function 2 hour ago so we've been driving 112 degree heat. Luckily I have not lost internet connection yet, so I have instagram to keep me company. "Mom, what exactly are we going to do at the farm?" My brother questioned. That caught my attention, I mean what exactly is there to do at a farm? "Well, you'll be working of course!" She said almost too enthusiastically. "BUT MOOOOOM! It's summer, I thought we didn't have to work?!?!?!?" My brother protested. "Listen you two, I think this will be a good experience for the both of you", She sighed softly,"I honestly don't think you guys appreciate the work it takes for us to get food on your plates and for people to make that food." Shes literally just spewing out nonsense now. "But mom I thi-" I begin, but am unexpectedly interrupted "No, that's it. Where going there one way or another. Conversation over!" I know if I continue she'll only get angrier. Brody looks really pissed, I can't say i'm not either. This summer is gonna be shit.
2 hours later
I was about just about to like Beyoncés' post on instagram when, wait for it, my phone completely lost all service. I knew it was going to happen anyways but this was my last glimmer of hope. That was my only distraction from all the shit that was going on at the moment, and now it's gone. Well maybe i'm over reacting but still, it's pretty disappointing. "Hey boys! Look, we're almost there!" My dad called out a bit too enthusiastically. "great..." I mumbled so no one but my me and my mind could hear. "Can we just not go on vacation? Let's just head back home right now, i'll drive!" My brother said as he attempted to negotiate with our parents. My mother looked back at him and glared with one of those "seeing into your soul" parent look, that sure shut him up, and me too. Out the window all you could see was dirt, trees, and more dirt. It's about 4 o'clock and the sun is still roaring with no sign of stopping, at least there will be air conditioning at the farm, right? Look at me, i'm getting exited over air conditioning, i'm so pathetic.
To keep my mind off the horror that was happening around me I thought about what all my friends were doing. Probably going to the beach, or seeing a movie. I wish I was there, maybe I could get a summer girlfriend, it's not like I can keep them for more than three months. Something always pushes them away, they say i'm too much like them, I wonder what that means?
Time was slipping away from me as I sat there and thought, I hardly even realized that the car stopped. "C'mon boys! Lets go meet Joe!" I bent down and shuffled my way out of the car. It felt good not to be crammed in the little seat I was forced into, I stretched a bit before taking in my surroundings. We were parked n a dirt field with fences surrounding it. It smelled of mud and manure, but at least the sun was starting to go down. I looked down at the watch my dad gave me for my birthday last year and it read 5:56, it's almost time for dinner. I hadn't even realized how hungry I was.
We grabbed our bags out of the trunk and started walking. We walked for a good 15 minutes before we got to where we would be staying. There were three cabins lined up next to each other. The biggest one was where Joe lived ,my dad told me. "Now you two boys will be sharing that one right there", my mom said as she pointed to the smallest cabin on the right, "and your father and I will be staying there." she finished, pointing to the the cabin in the middle. Just then we heard the door to the biggest cabin open. Out walked a slightly heavier man with beard, not too extravagant. "Matt! Sherri! How have you been? Glad you could make it!" He shouted in a heavy country accent and gave my dad a "man-hug". He looked over at me and Brody and said, "You two must be the boys! Hows 'bout I give to two a tour while you parents are getting settled?" We nodded and soon enough he was showing us the whole place.
It's pretty big, definitely not what I was expecting. We went by the stables were he showed us a collection of different horses. He told us that that was where Brody would be working, sucks for him 'cause it smells like actual shit in there. Then we saw the fields, the chickens, the pigs, and finally the cows. "And this is where you will be working Mason." He spoke as I looked out and them. They all looked identical, all boring and black and white, but there was one. One that was unlike the others, his shades of white were slightly brighter and his shades of blacks slightly darker. "That one o'er there" He said and pointed to the creature I had been staring at, "That one we call the king, all the other cows look up to him, but his real name is Zack." Zack, I couldn't keep my eyes off him. The way he moved the way he looked, I could have stared at him all day Joe hadn't stopped me. "You ready to go back now? Hit the hay?" "Yeah" I spoke softley as we walked back to the cabins. That night he was all I could think about, his shape, his form, his colors. All of it seemed to much, to perfect. As I slowly drifted off to sleep I pictured him in my mind and said to myself softly, "the king cow."
