Chapter One

. . .

LeAnna's POV:

They're fighting again. Sigh. Mom and Philip fight all the time. It sickens me that a male would hurt a female in any way, emotional or physical. He hits me, too. Usually he's drunk, high, or I did a little thing to set him off, like eating one of his "special"protein bars. He is a horrible person, yet Mom usually sides with him because she is scared he will hit her if she doesn't. I have only blown up on him once; it was a huge mistake. But, that is a story for another time. He never hits his daughter though. Her name is Tara and she is 9. She's surprising adorable and kind for having a father as horrible as that. She has no uncles or aunts, no grandparents, and her mother was murdered in their home two years ago. The killer wasn't caught and is still out there and Tara is scared she will get killed, too. She was the main target in the home invasion. The killer was intending to rape Tara, but only got as far as anal before her mother tried to save her. She was murdered right in front of Tara. Tara wakes up screaming every night with either nightmares about the attempted rape, or they are about her mother. I would turn him in the police for hitting us, but I feel for Tara. He is all she has.

You're probably wondering who I am. I'm LeAnna Robertson. I'm 5'5, 15 years old, brunette, glasses, nothing special. My best friend, Ireland Hooper, is the biggest Harry Styles fan I know. She is 5'4, 16 years old, brunette with blonde highlights, andglasses. She is the same situation as me with her step mother. I've known her since kindergarten and we have been TOTAL BESTIES since 6th grade. She wants to get out of the situation as much as I do, yet we are both so frightened that we never get as far as the end of the block.

. . .

Ireland's POV:

I walk down the sidewalk to the bus stop and I am stoping at my best friend LeAnna's house to make sure she's not late AGAIN.  She is always late, especially when her mom has anything to do with it.  Oh, look.  The lights are on this morning, she must have got a head start. Or her step-dad Philip is hitting on her again.  Sigh.  I walk up the cobblestone path up to her front door and I ring the doorbell and her hungover father answers the door.

"What do you want?" He said with a slurr, obviosly not done drinking yet.

"I'm just, uh, here to pick up LeAnna." I said, trying to hide my fear.  He gets violent with me too sometimes.

"You know, she can think for herself Rieland." He messed up my name? Really?

"Um, its Ireland, sir.  We just like to walk together, that's all."

"LEANNA!  YOUR FRIEND RIELAND IS HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"  He screamed at the top of his lungs.  Again. He messed up my name again.

"Sir, I hate to be disrespectful, but my name is Ire-Land, like the country."

"Excuse me?  I am an adult and you NEVER correct adults!! DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME?!"  He said getting up in my face.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Burns.  People get my name wrong so much and--"

"NO.  YOU'RE NOT SORRY.  GET OFF MY PROPERTY NOW!!!!" He cut me off with a slap to my face, making me fall down on the porch.

"PHILIP!!!  GET AWAY FROM HER!!" LeAnna screamed, pushing him out of the way to some to my side.  I could feel my eye bruising already.

The room, well porch, is spinning.  He hit me too hard.

"Ireland?  Are you okay?  SEE WHAT YOU'VE DONE?!" She said talking to me at first and then screaming at Philip.

The room is getting darker, but I could just manage to see Philip punching LeAnna in the face.

We're both out like a light.
