I can feel the magic even before we reach the boundary. I have never been this far into the woods before, so Jefferson had to explain to us how this works. There's a place in the woods that borders something other. Whether it's magic or another dimension, they don't venture that far. They use the magic that spills over into the clearing, creating their own nexus.
"This place is powerful," Emily comments, her voice full of awe. I have to agree. I wonder what she feels as a Reader, because I'm overwhelmed with it even without her magical power.
"Do we know what we're doing?" Jefferson asks, as we stop in the middle of the clearing. I've had all this time to think it through, so I guess it's time to share with the class. I know the moment I speak the words they'll become a possibility, and I'm scared.
"You got this," Isaac whispers, standing close enough that I can feel his body heat. I nod, taking another calming breath before I begin.
"I think the Moon Charm ritual will work as a basis." I say, my voice coming out a little shaky. I have to clear my throat twice before I can continue. "Essentially, Emily, Isaac, and I will be the water, the Ancient magic will be the flame, and you will be the moonlight."
They wait for me to go on, but a part of me is so terrified I don't know if I can. Isaac reaches for my hand, taking it in his, brining my attention to him as I fight off the panic attack. I feel a movement on my other side as Jefferson reaches over and takes my other hand. Then, both of the boys reach out to Emily, who takes their outstretched hands, completing the circle.
"We're in this together, Meredith. You are not alone."
But I'm still the leader, so I still have to live with the consequences of my actions. I know that's part of the job, but I'm still scared I'm making a mistake. But I guess that's also part of growing up. I can't sit back and do nothing, I've already decided that. And I would be no better than our parents if I backed out now. Intention is great, but it has no power without action.
"Isaac, what do you think?"
"I think Jefferson needs to shift."
We turn the the shifter in question just in time to see him nod his head.
"I'm stronger in my wolf form."
"Okay, then we need wood for the fire, to cast a protection circle and Isaac and I need to rework the spell."
Just like that, we all have our assignments. As Emily and Jefferson head off to get firewood, I turn to Isaac.
"Keep it simple and short." He says and I nod.
This part is tricky, because we don't typically write spells. Most of the witches in town have their speciality and that is what we stick with. My elemental magic is powerful enough without having to deploy words, just like Emily's Reader magic. But sometimes, spells are needed. So we've learned the basics over the course of our school studies. But outside of simple rituals, I've never had to write my own.
"You know, this can go in your book of shadows, for future generations."
"You're so sure it's going to work?"
"Yes, because I believe in us," Isaac replies without hesitation. "I think we will be the greatest leaders the town has known so far and this is where that begins."
"Have anyone ever told you you're very good with words?" I ask, rising to my tiptoes to place a quick kiss to his lips. He's my perfect other half and I hope with my whole heart that he's correct.
He pulls me closer, kissing me deeply, before letting me move away. Hand in hand, we walk as close to the boundary as we can, before we sit down on the ground. I bury my hands in the earth, letting the power of nature renew my strength.
