Anytime someone makes any type of noise, it sets my nerves on edge. We've been in the library for hours, but neither of us has been able to find anything on the mysterious illness. I'm running out of ideas, except for one.
"Jefferson," I put my book down, turning to the guy across the table from me. "I think you should go see what's going on."
"What?" Both he and Isaac ask at the same time.
"Look, you're the only one who can anticipate the sickness, so you can stay away from it. And maybe you can check on the Elders and see if they've come up with anything."
The guys exchange a look, communicating something between them that only they can understand. They have a strong bond, of that I'm sure of. But I have no other ideas, and they're not giving me anything to work with.
"It's not like I want you to go out there," I sigh, and that earns me a grin.
"What, worried about me?"
"No, but I'm sure Isaac would be a little sad if something happened to you."
The boys chuckle, while Isaac waves his hand in a maybe gesture. I don't want anyone going out there, but I know they won't let me go, so this is our only shot.
"I'll see what I can find."
The shifter gets up without another word, heading for the door. Just before he reaches it, I call out. When he turns, I stand, my eyes trained on him.
"Be careful."
"Will do." And then he's gone.
I sit back down, worried that I just made a huge mistake, but also knowing I have to live with whatever happens next. I don't even hear Isaac move until he settles in the chair beside me. Reaching over, he turns my chair to face his, but I can't look him in the eye.
"Hey," he whispers, tugging my chin up so he can see my face, "he'll be okay."
"And if he's not? If I just sent him to his death?"
"He could've said no, Meredith. I think we were all thinking this already. You just voiced it."
I study the boy in front of me, his quiet trust in me and my decisions, and I don't understand it.
"You're so calm. You just trust that I did the right thing? That he'll be okay?"
"Yes. As a Watcher, you are trained to follow the leadership of your coven witch."
"And that's who I am to you."
I stand then, moving away from him. I don't understand why his words pierce me so, but I'm suddenly fighting tears. I haven't had the desire to shed tears since this started, but here I am.
"That's not all you are to me."
"What?"
I turn as Isaac stands, weaving between the tables to reach me. He stops in front of me, looking down at me with so much emotion it makes my head spin.
"That's not all you are to me, Meredith. It may seem crazy to you, and maybe I'll scare you away by saying this, but the moment I met you, it was like I was always meant to know you. A part of me has already known you on some level. I don't understand it, and I'm surprised by it, but it feels right. We feel right."
For a moment, I can't breathe. It's like he's opened up my heart and pulled out the words I've been holding closed up inside. Because I've felt it too, since the moment he stepped up to where Emily and I were sitting.
"It's crazy."
"It's the craziest thing in the world. But we're witches. Is it really that impossible to believe that our connection is magical as well. Just not the magic we're used to."
