This was Kessie and I's first Christmas without our parents. Our Mom and Dad loved Christmas, every year we would watch movies and bake cookies together. But this year, that wasn't possible. JJ has been trying to make this holiday enjoyable for me again, but I've been dreading it.
I grunted as I pulled boxes out from the hall closet, "Do you need help?" JJ observed as I pushed them out.
"Nope. You can go through them with me if you want."
I sat on the floor and cut the tape off the boxes. "Lynn and Felix" was written in sharpie on the box, which was filled with our parents' old stuff. I picked up a picture of them on their wedding day, they had the most contagious smiles. There was a small pink box that said "Kessie & Y/N" I opened it and it was the pregnancy test from when she found out she was pregnant. Under that was our hospital wristbands and the ultrasound pictures from the first doctors appointment when they told her she was pregnant with twins.
"My parents had been trying to have a baby for years and when she found out she was pregnant, they threw this huge baby shower. Everyone thought the baby would be a boy, turns out she had twin girls." I laughed with my eyes watery.
"Your parents looked like really good people." JJ admitted, rubbing my back.
I kissed him, "The best people. They would have loved you JJ." and I was right, they would've really loved him. I knew that if my Dad was still here him and JJ would've worked on cars together and gone surfing. My Dad was my best friend and the day they got in the car crash, he was on his way home to watch the new episode of my favorite show with me. Kessie and I really did have the best parents, they did everything they could for us.
"I have an early gift for you." JJ beamed. He ran upstairs and came back down with a long white box. I opened the box and it was a gold necklace with a heart locket on the chain. When I opened the locket, it was a picture of me and him at Sarah's halloween party.
I wiped a tear away from my eye and wrapped my arms around him, "Thank you."
"One more thing!"JJ got up and ran to the kitchen. He grabbed out two boxes of gingerbread houses, "Mine is obviously going to be better." he sarcastically bragged.
JJ rolled the sleeves of his sweatshirt up and bit his lip concentrating. He caught me staring at him and I quickly looked away with a small laugh. Everything about him was perfect. And the fact that he cared so much to make this Christmas good for me, made me fall even more in love with him.
"Done!" he exclaimed. JJ turned his gingerbread house around for me to look at. In his sloppy handwriting he wrote, "I love my girlfriend". I pushed my lips together trying not to laugh because he looked so proud.
"Babe, I definitely think you won." I assured JJ.
JJ had the biggest smile on his face and picked me up onto his lap, kissing me.
"Let's go in the living room by the fireplace. I'm freezing." I suggest, putting my cold hands on his warm neck.
I turned on the fireplace and lit a candle. Crawling into my boyfriends lap, he put a blanket over me and held my hands in his. I closed my eyes in relaxation from the smell of christmas cookies and the warmth of the boys arms around my body. Whenever I would fall asleep in JJ's arms, he would never move because I was a light sleeper and he didn't want to wake me.
"Babe." JJ whispered.
"Yeah."
"Do you wanna go upstairs now?"
I sat up and peeked out the window, "I have a better idea."
I opened the front door and grabbed JJ's hand running outside. It didn't snow here, but it did rain. The rain fell so fast from the sky that my hair was immediately drenched. JJ put his hand out as a gesture for me to take it. I grabbed his hand and he spun me around. I wrapped my hands around his neck as we swung side to side pretending we were dancing to music. Our lips pressed together and the rain fell between them.
