age: seven
Audrey talks to James.
James talks about Anjelique.
If she thought she was strong,
now she's just weak.
She's seen them for months,
and for hours on end;
yet he still had no clue
that he was hurting his friend.
Admittedly, that's what she is,
and she's never assumed otherwise,
few people told her else thing
though she hoped there was truth in their lies.
But now she knows not to hope
because they wouldn't last long.
Those who thought they would
will just be proven wrong.
Because former two peas in a pod
for the whole of seven summers,
now two different people,
the faces of unknown strangers.
And although a brother he was not
and crush far too big a word,
before there were anything else,
James was Audrey's world.
So she entertains his ramblings
even though she'd rather not.
"So have you told her you like her?"
she asks as though she ought.
"Don't be silly," he tells her.
"I don't like her that way.
But the blonde in her hair and the blue in her eyes
could brighten anyone's day."
"Even the swish in her step
and the rose in her cheek—
—I don't know how to explain it
but it's just so Anjelique."
Audrey listens to James
and yes it hurts badly,
because although James is speaking here
his mind wanders distantly.
