Chris was in the locker room when someone suddenly hugged her from behind and gave her a kiss on the cheek. She closed her eyes to fully enjoy the moment before turning herself to face Street and give him a reprehensive look, however without breaking the embrace. They were now face to face still hugging and she said:
"You know we can't do this here, someone could see us."
"There's no one here, I checked." He responded while kissing her cheek again and moving towards her lips.
"Stop it! I mean it Street, not in HQ, you know the rule." She said trying to sound offended and while trying to stop him without putting too much effort into it.
Suddenly they heard footsteps and voices in the hallway. Chris quickly turned to face her locker while Street made is way to his. They stayed in silence while they were getting ready to leave. After a few minutes and because no one came in the locker room Chris said:
"That's exactly why I don't want us to kiss while we're working, even if we're alone."
"I know, but I've missed you today, and you almost got shot! How was I supposed to wait any longer to kiss my girlfriend?"
She looked at him and sighed. As much as she wanted to reprimand him, Chris had waited for this moment all day. When the suspect shot at her and the bullet almost hit her, all she wanted to do after he'd been apprehended was to hug Street and feel safe in his arm. But the team was there so she couldn't, all she could do was hope the day would go by fast so she could hug him soon. She knew Street felt the same because she could feel him looking intensively at her to make sure she was ok.
They both left HQ at the same time and met at Chris appartement. They entered the apartment, dropped their bag and looked at each other. Street could see Chris was struggling with something.
"Hey, Chris, what's going on?" He asked softly.
As an answer she just hugged him and quietly started to cry. He led her to the living room while still hugging her.
With a worried look on his face he stepped back a little to kiss her forehead and wiped her tears. He then said:
"You know you can tell me anything, right?"
Chris started playing with her hands, like she usually did when she had something on her mind, so Street put his hands on top of hers, squeezing them a little as to say he wasn't going anywhere. It gave her the courage she needed, so she took a deep breath and started talking.
"Earlier today, when that bullet almost hit me... She took a few seconds, looked into Street eyes and continued. It hit me. I could have lost everything! I'm finally happy where I am. I have a job that I love, I have you, which I never thought would be possible, even if Erika knew this day would come eventually."
Street gave her an intrigued look. Chris laughed a little and said:
"Yeah, she knew."
"But how? Nobody on the team knows! How could she have known when we didn't even know!" He asked surprise.
"Well... she saw how you were getting under my skin during the TLI competition, so she asked me if something ever happened between us."
"What did you say?" He asked with an amuse tone and a mischievous look.
"It's not funny Street! She giggled, she took a more serious tone and continued. I said that we had feelings for each other once but because we were on the same team we shut it down." She said with regret. I'm pretty sure she knew something would eventually happen one day even if she didn't told me.
Still with his amuse tone and his goofy smile on his face, trying to cheer her up, he continued:
"So to be clear, you admitted to someone else that you had feelings for me, when you wouldn't even admit it at the time? Wow, I never thought it would happen."
"Not fair Street!" She said while punching him in the arm and he laughed, pretending to be hurt.
Chris gave him a faint smile and looked down at her hands. Street looked at her and felt powerless seeing her like that. He could see that she was in her head and that something was still bothering her. The whole situation reminded her of Erika's death and he knew it had affected her a lot at the time. Erika was her best friend and losing her so suddenly really had put Chris in a dark place, she was doing better now, but Street could see the interior battle going on into Chris head.
"But in more seriousness, I know today was hard and that it reminded you of Erika."
She looked at him, surprised he knew what was truly going on.
"Chris! You don't have to say it for me to know you miss her. She was your best friend and roommate. I know you're not feeling upside down just because today you realized you could have lost everything, that's part of our job, and I don't think you, mentioning Erika, is a coincidence either."
Chris felt the tears coming back and tried to ignored them so they would go away, but she looked into Street's eyes and seeing how caring they were, she couldn't hold them back and they started coming down. Street took her in his arm and let her cry. She hugged him tight in return and let her emotions out. He knew that she needed it, she had a tendency to bury her feelings deep down inside of her and she had to let them out at some point. So, he let her do so and after a while, when she started to calm down, he softly said to her:
"I'm not planning on going anywhere Chris. I've loved you since the first day we met and that's not going to change because you're feeling sad or scared or upset from time to time."
He took Chris's chin to force her to look at him, before finishing what he had to say. As she was looking at him with her eyes red from the crying, he said:
"I don't get scared that easily and now that I have you, I'm never letting you go. I will ALWAYS be there for you, no matter what, you have to understand that." He said while emphasizing the word always.
As an answer Chris kissed him, because those words were all she needed to hear at the moment. She knew Street loved her, but deep down a tiny part of her was scared he'd leave her one day. The road to get where they were had been difficult so she couldn't help but think that it would eventually crumble down. For now though, she was grateful that Street was there to support her. It was not easy for her to open up and be vulnerable, so being able to find solace in him and let her guard down was a wonderful and new feeling for her and she didn't want to lose what she had just found.
"I just miss her, you know. She then said with sadness in her voice. I wish I could tell her about us."
"I know, but I'm sure that wherever she is, she's happy for you."
"I love you Street. Thank you for being here." She said while laying her head on his shoulder.
He kissed the top of her head, put his arm around her shoulder, took Chris's hand with the other and whispered:
"I love you more."
She smiled and they stayed like that in the soothing silence of the living room. They eventually fell asleep in each other arms exhausted from the day they just had.
