"Says here that you and Lisa went to the same school together at fifth grade. Care to tell me what was she like to you?"
Jisoo has to let out this small grimace on her face. Fifth grade, of course, Jisoo remembers how she dealt with Lisa back then.
How could she forget about her first friend?
It was sunny that one particular day-- in the midst of August. The students gathered up in their own classrooms to escape the fiery burning of the sun. It was hot and the students craved for nothing but ice cream, a bottle of water, and maybe an umbrella.
Under the said circumstances, Jisoo (with her pigtails) listened to the teacher attentively. She had to listen or her parents would be disappointed again. The last time they did, Jisoo was forced to squat in front of their yard.
She doesn't want that again.
Jisoo wrote down her notes calmly whilst the students were practically dying with thirst and the heat. But, Jisoo was still looking pretty and fresh-- opposite from the people around her. She placed her pen down when the teacher stopped talking. Jisoo lifts her head up slowly only to see the teacher talking to someone. Soon, the teacher introduced someone in class.
The girl-- no, was the person a boy?
Jisoo was rather confused. She guessed that he was a boy because-- what confused her the most was the person's hair. It was disheveled, short, and messy. She wondered if she can fix the person's hair herself.
"My name is Lisa Manoban." Jisoo was stunned to hear the boy's voice. "So she's a girl," she muttered to herself. The teacher looked around to find a space for Lisa but it seemed like no one wanted to give her some.
Except for Jisoo.
"Lisa, go sit next to Jisoo." The teacher instructed and Lisa did not even hesitate to place her black bag on the chair beside Jisoo's. Jisoo looked at her, observing her move and wondering why the hell was her hair too short. At least, for a girl.
"Hi," Jisoo found herself greeting the mysterious girl. Lisa blinked, her confused eyes dilated at Jisoo's pecan ones. "H-Hello." Lisa stuttered.
"Why is your hair short? Look at mine, it's long and pretty." Jisoo waved her hair in front of Lisa. The said girl's face was suddenly sketched with insecurities and jealousy; Jisoo did not miss it.
She ran her fingers thru her short ones. "M-My father doesn't like it when I have my hair long. S-So he cut it off..." Lisa explained with a hint of anxiety dwindling on her lips.
Jisoo did not understand why her father would do such thing but she already knew what fathers are capable of in the first place.
"Oh, your parents don't like you too?" It wasn't suppose to come out mean; Jisoo wanted to see if they are both in the same boat. Lisa stopped-- breathed, and sighed. "Yes."
Somehow, little Jisoo found something inside of Lisa. They're the same, Jisoo thought. She's just like me, were the words that revolved in Jisoo's mind.
Hence, she befriended Lisa. They went to cafeterias together, ate lunch together, shared some stickers that Jisoo bought every afternoon, and even talked about boys.
They were inseperable for almost two years.
And inside those years, Jisoo thought she found a friend. A friend in which she can relate to, a friend she can show her emotions with-- her struggles and every thing. However, Jisoo saw something that shows what Lisa really is.
It was Thursday and Jisoo was cleaning their classroom alone. Lisa was nowhere to be found, she told Jisoo that she was sick and was forced to stay home for a couple of days. Jisoo was worried and as much as she wanted to visit Lisa, she knows she can't because of her service every the afternoon.
Jisoo was minding her own business, cleaning off her classmates' filthy desks. "Argh, they are so disgusting." Jisoo mumbled when she found a piece of gum and even some used napkins. Jisoo swept it all on the floor then she passed by Lisa's desk.
She didn't worry much because she knows how Lisa was very keen and tidy on her things. Jisoo checked under Lisa's desk to see if she had anything going underneathe it. But what she saw made her furrow her eyebrows in deep confusion.
It was a piece of paper. It was folded neatly and it has Jisoo's name written on it. Jisoo slowly picked it up, opening the letter with the use of her tiny hands and that was where she saw every thing.
"Jisoo... I know you might hate me...
But I just wanted to let you know that you're more than just a friend to me...
I wanted you to know that even when our moments are few.
I wanted to say that Kim Jisoo, I like you."
Jisoo wanted to throw up.
Snapping out of her trance, Jisoo inhales the scent of the freshly yet tangy smell of the militant air. Every thing around her is so aggressive and barbaric that she feels like the chair she's into is nailing her down.
The stares that the interrogator is giving her are intense and vicious-- like a snake watching her breathe. Jisoo never likes it when she feels like she is being lung-trapped.
There are so many things that Jisoo hates. The dawn breaking which reminds her that she isn't dead just yet, the B in her grades which reminds her how much of a failure she is, the spruce skies in the middle of the day,
And homosexuals.
Jisoo ignored Lisa after seeing that letter which disgusted her to the point that she threw up almost every time she remembers it.
How could Lisa think to her that way?
She cringes, hugging herself when she suddenly feels frigid under her sweater. The voices in her head start to grow wild at how much she's suffering by a simple question.
"Ms. Jisoo, you need to answer my question." The interrogator clicks his pen again and again. Jisoo tends to be impatient as well, maybe that's why her mouth wouldn't move.
"Ah yes." Jisoo forces out a beam. "We did go to the same school and we were close but," she pauses. "But?" The interrogator trails off.
He waits for Jisoo's response.
But once again, Jisoo could only offer him a sinister smile.
