TW: miscarriage

"Alexander! Come quickly!" Eliza called through the house quickly. Her husband slid down the stairs and joined her in the washroom.

"What's wrong?" He asked and wrapped his arms around her waist, leaving his hands on her stomach as he rested his head on her shoulder, looking at what she held in her hands.

"Do the lines seem lighter on today's test than they seem on yesterday's?" She asked, taking a few shaky breaths.

Alex compared the two. He definitely did see a difference. The first test had two bright lines, indicating that his wife was pregnant once again. The second, however, had one bright line and the other was faint. He wasn't too surprised. He had seen it happen before.

"Oh, my love..." he said softly and held her a little tighter, moving his hands off her stomach, "we should go to the doctor... to make sure..."

Eliza sighed heavily and held back tears, not wanting to grieve before she knew for certain she had lost another baby. She dropped the tests onto the counter and turned around to hug the taller man. She kept her arms over his shoulders to leave room for his arms around her waist.

"Let's go to the hospital honey," He whispered to her and pulled away, taking her hand. He gently led her to the front door and helped her put on her shoes. He gently rubbed her arms as she started to crack, starting to sob into him.

He picked her up and carried her to the car, reminding himself to lock the door once she was seated. He opened the door and placed her in the passenger seat before running back up to the house to lock the front door. He got back to the car and set off on the 20 minute drive to the hospital.

Once there, Eliza and Alex made their way into the hospital and checked in with the receptionist to see if they were, in fact, losing their 4th baby in 2 years.

Their doctor met with them and did an ultrasound, checking for a heartbeat or any signs of a miscarriage. After multiple tests, they came back negative. The Hamiltons had lost another baby.

Eliza sat up in bed and rubbed her eye gently. She looked over to her right and noticed the empty spot beside her. The space where he husband should have slept was empty, and looked hardly slept in. The blankets were barely disturbed on his side and the pillow was still fluffed.

She furrowed her brows and got up, wrapping her robe around her and putting on her slippers before walking to the kitchen. She hated how eerily quiet it was.

"Alex? Are you home?" She called out through the house. No response. She checked his office. "This isn't funny!" She called again. Still nothing. She decided to try and text him.

Where are you?
Can you come home please?
I'm worried
Alex please respond!
Please call me!

She sighed heavily and tried calling him after he wouldn't respond to her messages. Over and over, she called him. She pressed redial time after time, but every time it went straight to voicemail.

The next call she made was to the police. They sent a couple officers over to take the missing persons report.

"When was the last time you saw Alexander?" One of the officers asked. Eliza took a deep breath and tried to hide her shaking.

"Last night, around 10pm. He was in his office, wearing his work clothes. He likes to work late so it wasn't unusual... I went in and told him I was going to bed. He kissed my cheek then returned his focus to his laptop. I don't remember what exactly he was doing on there... I went to our room and went to bed as I said I would... when I woke up, he was gone."

The officer wrote a few things down. "Has your husband ever left without saying anything before?" They asked. Eliza shook her head. "Any health concerns?" No again. "Well, since he is an adult, and there is no immediate concern for his safety, there is no reason to investigate. He probably just left on his own accord and forgot to tell you. He will be back within the next 48 hours for certain." The officer said and packed up.

Eliza sat there, helplessly, as the officers left. She knew her husband wouldn't just leave without telling her. He loved her too much. And he never ignored her calls and texts. Even when he was in meetings.

Something was definitely wrong and Eliza intended to find out.
