"Is this seriously what you chose?" I ask for the millionth time, exasperated. I can't believe that I got out of bed early for this. We made camp not too far from this farm last night, we thought it was best because we have to walk everywhere and walking is a bitch.
Prawn shrugs. "It sounded interesting, plus it sounded like the easiest thing to do."
"How do you even do this?" I say gesturing to the open field around us.
He furrows his eyebrows. "What you mean charm worms?"
I blink slowly at him with a blank expression. "No, I meant toad skipping." Rolling my eyes. "Of course I meant that, what else would I possibly be talking about?"
He shrugs again. "I dunno." He says as he looks around us.
The field we were in was one that we were directed to by the farmer who owns the land, he was also the one who posted the job on the board. The farmer didn't really give us much information of the 'worm charming', just that we had to do it in order to coax them out of their holes which would make catching them a lot easier.
The field itself was pretty barren, save some patches of grass and a few dozen flowers spread about erratically. It's like someone couldn't choose between having the field just be dirt or for it to be a grassy meadow with flowers. Which made half the field look pretty, while the other half was a muddy mess but there was still this beauty that it held.
The half with grass and flowers of various kinds, was gently caressed by the wind. It was like the gentle touch of a lover, sharing an intimate moment. The grass breathed life into the field, swaying with each exhalation and taking a pause between, creating a tranquil rhythm. The flowers creating both a gentile blush that crept along the field along with deep, captivating eyes which invite you farther. The scenery was so hauntingly human that you couldn't help but be entranced by it.
The earthy tones could be comparable to a soft skin tone of a powerful woman, unyielding and confident in her own body. The tones we idyllic and made the mess of all the mud almost seem appealing. It looked like it would be softer than anything I've ever touched, soothing and gentle on my skin. Yet there was a sense of craving, like the dirt was yearning for touch and was jealous of the soft embrace between the wind and grass.
But it doesn't make sense why the earth would be jealous of the love between the grass and the wind. The complexities of their relationship dynamics was obviously something beyond my comprehension and was probably eons in the making. It made me wonder how long this jealousy has been a constant in their monotonous life.
I suppose it's comforting to know that not even nature could avoid the unsolicited complications that life seemed to throw your way. Though it feels that complications was too gentle of a word for the absolute shit storm that had blown my way.
"You admiring Lauren?" Prawn said, breaking my chain of thoughts and engulfing me in confusion.
Knitting my eyebrows together, I ask. "Lauren?"
"Yeah, Lauren. It's the field." He explained with a gesture with his hands.
Pressing for more information. "Why Lauren?"
"'Cause Lauren sounds like a girl that'd break your heart and you'd happily let her do it."
"Can't disagree with that." I say while I thought of Lauren Jauregui, whom I'd be more than willing for the chance for her to ruin me.
"Is it weird that this field reminds me of a person?"
"I think it would be weird if it didn't. It just feels so... alive." I try to explain the thoughts I had earlier about it, but that's the most I could seem to express.
