So it was decided that the best thing for us to do is set forth to the ice cream shop to browse the flavors that we both knew all too well. An epic quest to quell the numbing feeling settling itself into my bones.
If Prawn and I had a second home it'd be in this particular ice cream shop known as 'Sweetest Delights'. It had seen us through highs, lows and just about all areas in-between. The flavors signifying the various shades of grey of emotions that we have both felt. Strawberry; when both Prawn and I had a crush on a Mozambican transfer student, whom friend-zoned us both. Vanilla; when we had something important to tell the other, like when I told him I liked girls, to the time when he told me that he took gold in Mario Carts (which is an achievement for him at any difficulty). Chocolate; when we both feel relaxed and talk more on topics like the meaning of life.
Our tradition is to get ice cream and sit at one specific bench in a park nearby. I don't know whether it was the convenience or the nostalgia that drew us to sit at that bench every time. Either way we decided to sit there to enjoy a cone of mint ice cream (our pensive flavor) when Prawn decided to break the easy silence.
"I have a thought."
"Wow, I didn't know you were capable of those." I chime in sarcastically. Prawn stares at me blankly, obviously not amused at my jab at him. Tipping my cone towards him, carefully balancing the uneven ice cream dumped on top, "Okay, shoot."
"Maybe there's like, aliens down there and they just sent out a bunch of paper aeroplanes in order to get someone to go there and set them free?"
"Hmm... well, I suppose. I don't know Prawn, that letter was specifically for you. As much as I hate your alien idea, it must be something else." I said, taking a moment to collect my thoughts. I then angle my body slightly towards him with an arm thrown over the bench. "I think the only real way for us to know what is wanted of you is to scope it out. Aren't you the tiniest bit curious?"
"I suppose my biggest worry is that it is like something we faced in high school" Prawn gives for a reply, grimacing at the memory.
"I suppose, but where is the fun in hiding in fear? We fear enough as it is, Prawn."
"I do agree that we should see if we can figure it out. I'm intrigued too, too much to just ignore it."
"I suppose we shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth or however that saying goes." Snorting at myself.
"So we're settled then?."
I hum knocking myself out of my head, "Yeah, I guess so."
"We should probably go sooner rather than later, you'd just procrastinate it until it's too late to go." Prawn says wisely.
"Very true." I state, pointing lazily at him. "Fine then let's get a move on."
I get us from the bench and pat my pockets, ensuring my keys and phone are in their place. Once it has been deemed that they are where I put them I let my eyes drift to Prawn, who has somehow gotten ice cream one himself and is proceeding to lick it off. I kick a nearby rock waiting for him to finish his task, in the process I let my eyes wonder.
They wonder from the dog walker who is being dragged around by a poodle, to the little girl crying about her scuffed knees and eventually my eyes land on the sight of our campus. It isn't very far away, as it is in the middle of a small town. The town itself isn't anything of interest, as it's entire existence is to cater to college students, a fact that the residents would not be particularly happy about.
