I hear a knock on the door. I hoped that it was not my brother, home early from his friend's house. I was enjoying the peace and quiet being home alone. Swinging open the door I come face to face with my enemy, who I have not talked to in years.

"Dane...what are you doing here?" I ask, holding back an eye roll. Dane is tall with blonde waves of thick hair that rest in his golden flecked chocolate brown eyes. His olive skin placed upon a muscular body, looked straight out of a Greek myth, something that Gwen would say.

"Oh just, ya know," Dane said with a grin, "I was in the neighborhood and thought I would swing by for a visit." Dane knows how much I hate him because of a few things that have happned in our very complicated past, but more like the stupid cafe chain Perk Up his father owns. Perk Up is the main competitor of the cafe my father owns, "Say it with Flour".

"So Dane, why are you here exactly?" I said, trying to get back on the topic of his presence. I still could not believe that he was standing on my doorstep, but stranger things have happened on my doorstep.

"Like I said, I was in the neighborhood and wanted to see you." Why me and why now? I thought to myself. Like I had thought before I had not talked to him in years so seeing him now was very strange to me.

"Okay, so do you like need something?" I was starting to get extremely annoyed by his presence.

"Not specifically, but- is your dad home?" He asked. I was not liking the sound of this. Why did he care?

"Uh, what do you think?" I asked, sounding snarky. Of course my father wasn't home, he owns a small bakery, in which he was at almost all day, everyday. And Abuelita Rosa was out shopping with her old lady friends, so she'd be out for a while. And Roberto was still playing video games at his friend's house, so he probably wouldn't be home until dinner. I've been home alone for at least an hour, just doing my homework and thinking about what to bake next.

"Well, I'm assuming no one is home because your house is quiet, not that you have a loud family, just that your dad probably would have come to the door and glared at me by now." Dane replied, looking devilishly sure of himself. I choke down a giggle because even Dane knows that my dad is not the biggest fan of him. Mostly because of the whole competition with our riverally bakeries, but also my dad does not love me hanging with boys, especially Dane.

"So what no one is home. It doesn't matter," I say looking back into the house, hoping my grandma would spawn inside, so I would have a valid excuse for slamming the door in Dane's face.

"So, uh, can I come in," Dane asks with a grin. I want to say no but at the moment I felt like seeing where this would go. I did not want to say yes, but it had been so long since we had talked I thought it could be a good idea to catch up a tad. I honestly do not know why I am doing this but why not.

"Okay, fine," I reply, "but only for a little bit because I have to get my homework finished." I of course already finished all of it, even all of the math homework Mrs. Silverstine assigned- which is always way more than necessary.

"Okay," he replied, but I could tell he had no intention of leaving anytime soon, but my family might be home soon and I really cannot have him anywhere near my house when they are.

When we got inside, I sat down in the love seat and Dane sat on the couch. Dang this silence is awkward, I thought to myself, which I realized after sound way cheesy. I really needed to say something, but I did not know what.

"Ok Dane," I said abruptly, trying to end the awkward silence, "I know you didn't just happen to be in the neighborhood, you don't live anywhere close to here"

"Okay, okay, you caught me," Dane said, looking at the floor. When he looked up he said, "honestly I just wanted to come see you but like I didn't want to come until I knew what to say, which I now realize I never really thought about what to say, but I was lonely, and figured you probably were too." Dane babbled on about his father. Dane and his father did not have the best relationship and it's a wonder he has lived here this long. To be fair he did leave for a year or two but he ended up moving back last year.

"Dane," I unintentionally whispered. He looked up with his sad brown eyes. "I know you have been through a lot, but I want to let you know that I'm here for you." Holy crap what am I saying. Dane looked at the floor and back up again. I am sure he did not see that coming, since I had been hostel to him since he randomly showed up at my house a little over ten minutes ago.

"Thank you, Ali. That means a lot to me, ya know," he stared into my eyes. This felt really weird. I couldn't explain it, but the feelings that I was experiencing were unlike anything I have felt in a long while. I had never felt so close to someone who I was supposed to feel so far from.

"Yeah Dane. It's really no problem." We heard our eye contact for a bit too long. He looked away, staring at an old clock grandma found at a thrift shop.

"If you need to get home it's totally ok because ya know I have homework to do and a bunch of other chores and stuff-" I was abruptly cut off, by Dane's mouth intercepting mine.
