Growing up

The light shines in your eyes when you’re a kid,
The wonders of the world is what you want to see,
Your mind, an open jar without a lid,
You are who you want to be.

Now you are older,
The light’s still there,
However drowning in the dark,
Gasping for air.

The beliefs of your family are thrown unto your shoulders,
The responsibilities that come naturally with age,
Are what cause the darkness,
What creates the cage.

Expectations from society,
Judgemental stares,
Are the only things you see.

“Just be yourself!”
No room for shame,
Just paint a fake picture,
And play along with the game.

The longer you play,
The less and less the light shines,
Struggling to find its way,
To bring joy to your life.

Soon there is no light,
Just empty orbs,
Staring into the night.

“Where did I go wrong?”
“What should I have done?”
From the darkness,
You try to run.

Where to go?
Where to run?
You look for a path,
Yet you find none.

It’s too late,
You’ve come to far,
You missed the opportunity,
To show who you are.

If a child is reading this,
I want you to know,
That’s how growing up truly is,
Please take it slow.
