Ode to America

The light flickers and fights to stay lit

Before it finally lets itself be smothered

A suffocating human fights for air

Before their lungs except defeat

The world burns itself to ash

Before it decays by evolution

The stepped upon raise their fists

To God in heaven

They claim the torturous ways of the world

Before they are burned at the stake

Slapped into handcuffs

While on the sidelines we laugh

We kill and rampage and steal

Before we negotiate

Peace is not real

It never will be

Hide your body in those of your victims

For we live here forever

And it's better than ever

We are just and cruel

We are peaceful,

As we hold knives to your throat

Before we die

We kill all those around us

Here where innocent lay,

To wither for all time

Before we honor their memory

We spit in their faces

History class cannot erase all failures

No, it is unable to wipe out that much

Even those who are forced to die out

Before they are accepted

Those who must scream in terror

Before the are ever truly heard

Those who must die

Before they are remembered

Because you don't breathe underwater

Before you're on the very brink of drowning

And you don't close your eyes

Before sleep rapidly approaches you

You never die

Until something forces you to

And something always will

With no exemptions

They will shame you

Hit you

Hurt you

Abuse you

For the color of your skin

Or your gender

Or your love

Or your mind

Here in America!

This great unfinished symphony

Of cacophony and raucous noise

Of destruction and demolition of the mind

While the untroubled leer

The kid next door cuts his arms in a bathroom stall

While their guardians become intoxicated

A child ties a noose

Downs a bottle of pills

Takes a swan dive off a roof

While the affluent swathe themselves in diamonds

The people on the street starve

And they freeze and they weep

For when did life become this hopeless?

This lost?

This devoid of all but

Hate and privilege and spite

While two boys are beaten for holding hands,

A black man is choked to death

I can't breathe

I Can't Breathe!

I CAN'T BREATHE!

The smoke and smog we've drowned our Earth in

Is no longer fit for human lungs

But let's learn equations and functions

For my mind is dead anyway

Keep us from the truth

But you cannot stop a hurricane coming towards you

You can only run, and escape

Before you are demolished

You only cry,

Before you the trigger on yourself

You only stay blinded

Until the truth hits you

You were never worried about freezing

Before you slept outside

You shamed others

Before you were shamed

Because the truth is,

You never truly die,

Until something forces you to.
