"Okay, truth or dare?" Said a navy-haired girl as she eyed her step-brother. "Um, truth." See, her step-brother, Zander, was never one to say dare. He was always scared of having to do something idiotic, and he'd rather keep his dignity than impress some morons.
"Okay. Who do you like?" Zander's periwinkle eyes widened. This was the one question he'd been praying he wouldn't be asked.
"Seriously, Hailey?" He scoffed. "What are we? In sixth grade?" He defended himself. "No, but you're certainly acting like one. Just answer the question." Hailey smirked at her brother.
"I can't it's private." Hailey sighed. "Fine, but I think I already know who it is."
--
Hailey's suspicions were correct - Zander did like him. But, Zander would never admit it. See, this "him" so none other than Luke Peterson, Zander's childhood best friend. But, Zander utterly convinced himself that Luke would never once, in his entire life, consider Zander as anything more than that. A friend.
However, every time Zander would see Luke, he'd get butterflies - butterflies that would never leave.
"Hey, Zander!" Luke's deep voice said from behind. Zander spun around seeing his best friend (and crush).
"Oh, hey, Luke." Once again, the butterflies returned. "So, I was wondering," Zander felt as if his cheeks were going to explode. "If you'd, maybe, want to come over to my house after school?" Luke smiled kindly.
"Oh, um, yeah! Sure, yeah." Zander wanted to slap himself. Luke giggled. "All right then. See you later." With that, Luke disappeared.
Now seeing nobody in the hallway, Zander sunk to the floor, taking a breath. He'd been to Luke's house a hundred times, but for some reason, he felt like he'd just been asked to meet the Queen.
Zander couldn't wipe that goofy smile off his face for the rest of the day. Until he caught up with Luke outside.
"Hey. You ready to go?" Luke smiled, flashing his brilliantly white teeth. The butterflies shot into Zander's stomach again.
"Yeah."
