"YOU SLEPT WITH HIM!" Alice yelled.

Nicole frowned at the unnecessary noise, leaning against the pillows of the sofa. Screaming was such a ridiculous way of asserting dominance. It was obvious she was listening, and she understood the rage. The lash out was irrelevant.

"That's what I just said. Can you tone it down?"

Alice swallowed, her face red. It was in those moments she just wanted to shout out some choice words, but all of them were whisked away from her mind and she couldn't express herself. Later she would come up with a really great way to handle the situation, but looking at Nicole's unbothered expression made her falter.

"How could you?!" she blustered.

"Okay, calm down. Ali, I understand why you're mad. I would be too, but it's not like I planned it. I was already a few drinks in, so was he..." she trailed, "and things happen. It meant nothing."

Carolina was sitting at the kitchen table, eating breakfast and enjoying the show. She expected Nicole would find someone to be with during the party, but she was far from guessing who it was.

"Of course it didn't." Alice laughed, tears running down her face. "Because that's what you do. You sleep around like the whore you are and you don't give a shit about everyone else's feelings."

Nicole sat up frowning, unsure of what she had heard. She expected Alice's anger. She didn't expect to be insulted like that.

"Excuse me?" She stared at her. "I'm here, telling you what happened because you are my friend, and you try to shame me? I am not a whore."

"You kind of are." Carolina shrugged, eating a piece of toast.

She rose a brow, staring at both girls in disbelief. Her friends, of all people in the world, were turning against her.

"Okay, I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that because I know you are not thinking straight," she sighed. "I just wanted to apologise to you. I'm going to work now."

Alice stared at her as she left, gritting her teeth.

"What kind of friend is she?" Her throat was sore, and she sat by Carolina. "I can't believe she did that to me. She knows I love him."

"Ali..."

"Don't," she cut her off, crying freely now. "There is no excuse for what she did. If she really was my friend, she wouldn't have done that."

Carolina hugged her and let her cry against her chest. Deep down, she believed it was her fault for pressing Andrew to throw the party. She knew it wasn't something Alice wanted but did it anyway, and now she was crying.

"What are you going to do?" she asked, stroking her hair.

Alice hadn't really thought about it. If she could, she would dig a hole and hide inside it. The world was being too cruel to her lately.
