Lisa sat on the floor space of the apartment's kitchen, playing with a stuffed monkey. Early morning orange and yellow streaks of light painted the apartment through the big window. Jennie wasn't awake yet. The door to the bedroom remained closed.

As much as she said she hated it, Lisa was elated whenever Jennie babied her, by bringing home a toy, art supplies, coloring books. Jennie gave her the innocence she never had.

Lisa was restless, and knew better not to wake up mommy, so she waited in the kitchen for mommy to wake up and made her breakfast. She couldn't turn on the TV, so whatever she could do to figure out how to entertain herself, it had to be quiet.

Sometimes, the monkey slept in the bed with Lisa and Jennie. This resulted in the monkey absorbing Jennie's distinct smell. Lisa always thought the bed sheets smelled like Jennie. Her scent was hard to describe; a mix of sweet and 'citrusy'.

An expensive perfume, maybe?

Either way, the smell comforted Lisa. Sniffing the monkey reminded her of the mommy that loved her more than anything, and how she was safe with her.

She was loved. By her.

After playing by herself for a little while, Lisa heard rustling coming from within the bedroom. Her heart fluttered as she got excited.

Mommy was awake!

She sat on the floor, clutching her monkey tightly when Jennie opened the bedroom door. Her bedhead was only slightly messy, and she rubbed her droopy eyes as she walked into the kitchen wearing an oversized T-shirt that fell just below her hips. She smiled upon seeing the baby Lisa sitting adorably on the floor.

"Good morning, sweetheart.." Jennie said as she walked over to Lisa, towering over her and planting a kiss on top of her head.
"Morning, mama." Lisa squirmed in place and hugged the monkey, smiling at Mama's kiss.

"How long have you been awake, sweetheart?"

"I don't know, mama. Half an hour?"

"Aww, poor thing. I'm sorry for keeping you waiting so long. Thank you for not waking up mommy." Jennie smiled down at Lisa, still sitting on the floor. "Get up now. Mommy needs to make breakfast for you." She said, gently nudging Lisa's bum with her foot.

"Can I go watch TV, mama?" Lisa said as she leapt to her feet. She held the stuffed monkey in one hand, dangling in her grasp.

"Of course, angel. But I don't want you watching the news. There can be a lot of scary things on there."

"I know, mama."

Lisa lay down on the couch, still clutching to her monkey. She flipped the channels until she found some mindless reality TV.
Jennie cut up fruit for Lisa as the noise of the TV droned in the background.

After a while came "Lisa, dear. Breakfast is ready."

"Can I eat it here, mama?"

"Not today. Come to the table."

Lisa arose from the seat on the couch, leaving the monkey resting on the cushions. She took a seat and Jennie served a bowl of various fruits off all different colors; strawberries, blueberries, green grapes cut in half, banana slices, and blackberries. Lisa stared down at the bowl and looked up at her mommy with a discontented look on her face.
