It was coming up to Tom's 18th Birthday, he was both excited and nervous. When werewolves turn 18 years old they get the chance to meet their mates if they are in the same pack or surrounding packs. Tom was an Alpha, well, not just yet. He wouldn't be Alpha until he had turned 18 and found his mate, Alphas can't run packs without their mates as it is a two person job. Alphas also had their second in commands - the Betas. Betas are the ones in charge when the Alphas and their mates are away from pack. The Alphas sometimes choose their best friends as their Betas, but sometimes they don't choose, in that case; the old Beta's oldest son or daughter will be Beta when they step down when the old Alpha does.
Tom's best friend Jake just happens to be the Beta's oldest son which makes him Beta by birth. Jake won't be Beta until his father steps down when Tom's father does. Their father were born Alpha and Beta just like they were, and they were also best friends. It is very important for Alphas and Betas to get alone so they work together and focus on their duties. Betas don't need to wait for their mates to take their titles like Alphas do, Alphas and Betas also shift before normal werewolves do. A normal werewolf will start shifting at 16 years old, while a Alpha and a Beta will start shifting at 13 years old.
Tom was looking forward to meeting his mate, but was also nervous about it as he wasn't sure if they would like him. It is every werewolf's worst fear of being rejecting by their mates, as it hurts both physically and emotionally, and it can even kill a werewolf. Jake was a week older than Tom, so Jake was already 18, but he hasn't found his mate yet, but he was dating a pack member, Nicole. Tom never liked Nicole, he always thought that there was something off about her. She and Jake started dating around 16, Jake was a sweet and kind guy, he was just a bit impatient. The only thing he didn't let Nicole take was his first time (if you get what that means), he was saving that for that his mate. Nicole didn't like it but knew she wasn't going to get any from him. Jake made it clear he will break things off once he found his mate, which angered Nicole.
Tom's birthday is in two days, so the pack was super busy getting ready for it, Tom's mother was the most excited, she even went and woke him up early to start prepping for that day, even though it is in two days. "Tom honey! Wakey Wakey!" Tom groaned and opened his eyes to see his mother in a summer dress smiling and opening his curtains. "Mum, really? What time is it?" Yawning and rubbing his eyes while getting up his mother got him some clothes to wear for the day. "It's 7 in the morning. Your 18th is in two days, you need to make sure you are 100% ready!" Rolling his eyes he agrees and watches his mother leave his bedroom before getting dressed and ready for the day. He knew this was going to be two long days.
Tom was walking up to Jake's house to greet him when Nicole came out wearing Jake's favorite jacket that Tom brought him for his 18th and saw him, she put her smile and walked up to him. "Tom, how are you? Looking forward to the big day?'' Pretending to be nice, he smiled back and nodded at her. She didn't wait to hear him out as she took off after he nodded, Jake came out a moment later before Tom got a chance to knock on the door. "Hey T. How you doing bro?" For some reason seeing Nicole swearing Jake's clothes and hearing Jake call him bro was suddenly bothering him, he shrugged it off and gave him a real smile. "I'm doing great. You ready to chill for the day while the pack goes crazy?" Jake nodded and started to follow Tom, they were heading to their hang out where only they knew of. They both discovered the place while they were exploring around when they were pups. The place would always bring up great memories for them, however they did not seem to noticed that someone was following them.
That someone wanted to make sure that they stayed just friends, as they had big plans and they did not want to be disturbed. They came out of the shadows, revealing Nicole. "Go ahead and have fun boys, you won't be able to once you have your mates and duties, I'll make sure of that" She started to laugh evilly as she then left and started to put her plan into motion.
