"Oh my baby, mommy's gonna miss you so much.", My mom cries out dramatically in the middle of the corridor, outside of my new room. I could feel people staring at us. She pulls me into a bone crushing hug as she sobs into my neck. I look at my dad with pleading eyes but all he does is chuckle and poke his tongue out at me.

Sigh.

I know you're probably wondering why my mom is acting like this. It's simple, you see I am finally leaving the nest, I got a scholarship to study in Pretoria, which is only a 4 hour drive away from home. This, believe it or not, would be the first time i have been in another province without my mom or dad, or any other adult by my side in my 18 years of life. So it is safe to say I have been babied pretty much my whole life.

That is the price I have to pay for being an only child, with a mom who has far too much time on her hands. Its pretty understandable why she would act this way however (and don't get me wrong), this bird needs to spread her wings.

Wings, which were currently being crushed under the weight of her loving embrace.

"Mama! I-... ca-n't b-breathe!" I wheeze out. I could feel the tears stinging my eyes. Once again, I look to my dad for some help and this man has the audacity to roll his eyes at me, could he not see that i'm dying.

Oh God, I know this isn't how you're ending my story, I'm too young, I was just starting my life.

"Okay, honey, let go. We have to go before it gets dark." Finally, my dad chimes in. He gently pries me out of her arm, she sniffles and dabs the tears with a tissue. My dad then pulls me pulls me into his own arms. He sways with me slightly before kissing the top my head and pulling away.

"I am so proud of you Rainy, so very much. I love you, aneh?", He turns to face my mom, pulling her into his side, he continues, "We love you, don't forget that."

"We're one phone call away. Whatever you need." My mom adds on, kissing my forehead as well.

"I love you guys too." I say in response, I pull them both into one last hug.

"Alright then, honey love, lets get this show on the road!" My dad  exclaims, he plants a kiss on my mom's lips and twirls around and once more in the direction of the  stairs to exit. My mom turns to me and blows me a kiss, which i obviously catch and put to my chest, before sending one back at her.

"Bye-bye, my angel." My dad shouts over his shoulder to me as they slowy disappear down the strairs.

With that, I walk into my small shared room, adorned with a 2 single beds, 2 study desks, 2 wardrobes, tiny kitchen in the corner and my suitcases sitting by my bed.

Just like that it hit me, I was alone. A young adult, out in the world. All alone. For the first time ever. It's now or never I guess. It can't be that bad...

...right?
