"You'll be safe, right?"
I nod, ignoring the heat that crawls up my neck. I'm still unsure of how Asher managed to convince my dad to let me spend two days with him. Just us two alone, to clarify. He said they had an awkward conversation, similar to this one.
The one that Candice brings up to make sure that I'm being responsible. Asher handled it well, then again his sister is very similar to my stepmom. They have no shame whatsoever when it comes to these topics.
I zip up the bag that I packed for the weekend, turning to face her. "Yes," I reassure.
"I know you're being responsible, but it's my job to remind you."
"Oh, I know." I glare playfully, shuddering at all of the talks that we have had. "Thank you," I add, if it wasn't for her I would be lost and making dumb choices.
My phone vibrates on my dresser, Asher letting me know that he's on his way. I send a quick reply for him to drive safely and tuck my phone in my pocket.
Candice stands up to leave, stopping when she reaches the door frame. "Text us often so we know you're okay." She tells me in a serious tone.
"I will," I smile, the last thing that I would do is cause them to worry.
Once I've got everything I need, I slip my shoes on and wait for him in the living room. My dad sits with a cup of coffee on the couch, watching some sort of commercial. I've had a talk with both of them already on making sure to call if I need them. I know they're just being protective and caring which I'm grateful for.
I all but jump up in excitement at the sound of Asher knocking. I've been anticipating today for the past week. I'm not even sure of where we are going, but I'll be happy with anything.
Cold air enters the room immediately, I receive a kiss before he glances behind me curiously.
"Are they awake?" The door blocks the living room so I open it wider to let him in and watch as my dads face lights up.
They take their sweet time conversing and I have to patiently wait. We technically have no rush to get there, not like I even know where that is that we're headed to. I actually love that he's so close with my dad.
Asher finally remembers about me, nudging my side with a smile. "We should get going before traffic gets bad." He stands up, holding his hand out for me.
"You sure you don't want to take my dad instead?" I tease, causing them both to laugh.
His brow raises, amusement covering his face. "You wouldn't mind?"
I roll my eyes with a smile, Asher takes my bag for me while I say goodbye to my dad. I promise to call when we arrive, and leave with that.
It's four in the afternoon when we finally make it on the highway. We will have a full day there tomorrow, and leave before it gets dark. That's about all the information that I have been given.
"How long is the drive?" I ask, hoping you get any hints.
Asher doesn't budge, glancing at the time before answering. "Two hours, probably more." His hand slips into mine, which I gladly accept.
I nod, chewing on the inside of my cheek. "You're not using a GPS? So, you've definitely been here before." I confirm, talking to myself.
"I'm not telling you," Asher says with a laugh.
I do like surprises, but the anticipation sometimes kills me. It would be nice to have solid details and daydream about things that could possibly happen. Instead, I have nothing to go off of.
