Sarah - Works as a cashier in her mid 20s, loves puppies and dogs
John - A retired Man in his 70s or 80s, cares for his old pal Proxy
Proxy - John’s old pal and best friend
Setting
Small Talk at the check out in the store. Present, and days that pass by.
Lights up to reveal Sarah is
busy working as a cashier.
Checking out people’s groceries.
Sarah then notices John
waiting patiently in line.
Then smiles at the next
person in line.
Sarah
(after a couple of customers later) Hello John, how are you, and your dog doing?
(enter John, who’s been waiting in line)
John
(looks a little confused) Hello uh- remind me of your name, young one.
Sarah
(smiles) It’s sarah
John
(gives a little smile) ah yes, Sarah.
(small pause) I’m doing just fine, so is my proxy.
How about you young one?
Sarah
I’m managing.
John
Ah (small pause) is that a good thing or a bad thing? That managing
Sarah
(a little surprised at herself) oh, it’s a good thing, sorry for the confusion.
John
Oh, it’s alright. To be honest I'm managing myself. I don’t have long till my proxy is you know
(hesitant to say it) in peace soon.
Sarah
(in a state of shock for a moment) So soon already? If only dogs can live long
John
You know, I’ve had my proxy for about 15
Years, that's a very long time for any dog. My proxy is no different, but she’s special.
Sarah
(seems sad) I know, I love puppies and dogs, it breaks my heart when they- you know.
John
Yes, I’ve had about 3 dogs before my proxy. One thing a dog can teach you is unconditional love. Even at my old age I can still feel proxy’s love for me. She might be wondering where I’m at right about now, she hates to wait too long.
Sarah
Alright, see you later John.
(John leaves scene)
lights go out
moments later Lights come back on
