"Aye, Vic!"

It was Friday, the school day was already over. Normally all stresses would be disarmed for the dark skinned dancer, but the impending question clouded her mind with nerves as she tried to wind down from dance practice in the locker room.

Normani, will you be my girlfriend?

He hadn't asked her yet but she knew what he was up to with this surprise, 'super secret' dinner he had planned for tomorrow night. Nevertheless, the question played over and over again in her mind, the way it would sound when he asked her was consuming her at this point.

A part of it was nerves- excitement! Her very first boyfriend, how cool is that?

And on the other side of it was...uneasiness? Indecisiveness? Hesitation? She didn't know the word.

She knew she liked him, she knew he was a great guy, she knew Charles would be good for her- shit he already was. And she was pretty sure her mom would like him. Probably even her dad too, if it ever matters to her.

Perhaps she's putting too much pressure on her first official relationship, she thought. Too many rom-coms depicting toxic relationships and all consuming obsession. She can't exactly expect a Romeo & Juliet situation, nor should she want to. It didn't end so greatly for them.

I really do like the kid though...I'm way too in my head-

"Where's the girlfriend at? She didn't follow you in here?"

"Leave my baby alone."

At the pet name, Normani starts to eavesdrop on the conversation between her fellow dance squad members: the iconic duo of Victoria and Ariana.

She made herself look busy in the bustling locker room filled with the rest of her team. She faked as if she was digging in her locker for something, trying her best not to look like she was being nosy even though she totally was.

"Oh she's your baby now? Wowww, look at y'all. Real official." The shorter brunette quipped.

Normani ever so slightly peaked her head around the door of her locker, not enough to be spotted by the two who were feet away, but enough to see their faces as they conversed.

Victoria offers a bashful smile, rolling her eyes at her friend's playful teasing. "Really not. She hasn't asked me out or anything."

"Really? With the messages I saw on your lockscreen the other day, I would have guessed differently."

"Oh my- thank you for reminding me to turn my text previews off." Her face goes red through Ariana's laughter, shoving her head in her locker as she gathers her things.

"Seriously, though. She seems sweet."

Victoria smiles again, her head bowed down as she blushes. She looks up at her best friend. "She really is."

"Then why don't you ask her out? Maybe you make her too nervous." Her friend shrugs. "You have that effect on people sometimes.."

She sighs, "Mmcht. Cause I want her to ask me..Is that childish of me?"

"Mm I mean definitely a little but I get it."

The pair of friends stop talking when the girls' basketball team floods the women's locker room.

This caught Normani's attention too, "The hell? I thought the girls' sport schedule was clear today? We should have it to ourselves..." She mumbles to herself.

She notices a couple of her team mates looking at her, assumably expecting her to explain seeing as she is their co-captain. And the upper class-men captain was out sick today, leaving Normani to be the sole voice of the team.
