fourteen

"stupid girl!" alexander laughs in my face, his foul breath clogging my
nostrils. his ears turn a deep shade of red, his cold fingers leaving bruises down my throat.

"please stop-" i choke out before he holds my neck even tighter.

"shut up, bitch! you do as i tell you!" he shouts over my desperate screams. niall is being pinned to the ground by charles, struggling to fight off the spirit.

i nod, trying to do anything to get him to stop. the light that once filled the tunnel has diminished to only a sliver, sunset now fanning over the great city.

alexander pushes me back to the ground, the base of my skull hitting the dirt. i groan, holding the back of my head. my eyes search all over for a way of leaving this situation without getting caught by the police, but my grey eyes fail to seek out a new escape.

"put your hands against the tunnel. if you say a word, i'll slice your throat." alexander growls, kicking me from my place. i do what i'm told, knowing if i don't, i would die.

niall calls my name, trying to reach out to me, but his hands grasp at nothing but air. "alexis! be strong." the blonde haired boy tells me before getting punched by charles once again.

hot, salty tears stream down my cheeks. my tongue laps up the liquid, my throat dry from the amount of screaming and running that i've done today. i don't want to lose niall. i can't give up now.

alexander kisses my neck, mumbling a quiet "i'm sorry," before smashing my head against the metal tunnel.

when i wake up, everything is blurred and i feel all groggy. "niall?" i call out, stretching my tired limbs.

"lex...you're finally awake." a soft voice whispers into my ear. my eyes take notice to my surroundings. i'm in a forest, with great green trees and the smell of pine and wet dirt beneath me.

niall traces my lips with his index finger, my head laying in his lap. "what happened? last thing i remember is alexander hitting me..."

he sighs, standing up and letting my head fall. "don't worry about it. i took care of it."

"what's that supposed to mean? we are in a goddamn forest, for pete's sake! just tell me what's going on?" i yell at him, standing up. all of the sudden, there's a pounding in my temples, and the back of my head throbs with pain.

"why can't you drop it?" he screams at me, fist clenched and nostrils flaring. he races towards me, his fist raised like he's about to hit me.

i flinch, cowering behind a tree. the sunlight looks like it's about noon, so that must mean i slept through the night. he peeks around the tree, niall's expression is now soft.

"are you scared of me?" he whispers, gently touching my cheek. i collapse back to the ground at his feet, not daring to take the chance of looking back up at him.

"baby. look at me." he urges, sitting on the ground next to me. niall fiddles with my fingers, pressing them to his cheek.

my eyes look up into his, tears present in his baby blues. "why are you crying?" i ask him, my t-shirt from the psychologist office is stained with sweat and blood.

"i don't want you to be afraid of me. alexis, i really can't tell you what happ-" he begins again, trying to keep calm this time.

i cut him off, "just tell me why i'm in the forest. explain to me what happened with alexander in the tunnel and explain to me why the police haven't caught us yet!"

niall crosses his arms, uncomfortable with the question. "i took you here after, uh...after i allowed charles to...cut me instead of alexander killing you."

alexander was going to kill me? "what? i don't understand. where are they now?" i question, flipping over nialls arm to look at his cuts.

all up and down his arm there were tiny scratches ranging to deep marks and blood smudges. "i don't know. they could be causing havoc in the city." he winces as i press onto his wounds.

i spot a stream not too far away, dragging niall towards the fresh flowing water. "put your arm in. now."

he does as the he's told, turning the water pink from the fresh blood.

"you know i'm lucky to have you." he whispers and presses his lips onto mine.
