Episode II:
It's Not Just A Creek?
After a grueling week of school, homework, and chores; Saturday morning dawned clear and warm. Both Sioux and Rick met up after breakfast. What little time they had through the week to go to the clubhouse was well spent. They were happy with the results so far.
The day looked promising for a good explore. They had planned to pick up Dale along the way, they had to pass through his cow pasture anyway. Sioux and Rick had packed up their packs the night before. They had snacks, lunch, and everything they needed for a day out, including a lot of Bazooka for the needed Bazooka breaks.
The two boys checked their gear at the clubhouse before setting off towards Dale's farm. They made it pretty quickly to the fence at the cow field. Rick started to duck under the fence then; BANG! Rick let out a squeal, falling flat on his back!
Sioux was doubled over laughing, tears running down his cheeks. "Rick!" he huffed out,"I tried to tell you the fence is electric, man!" Sioux slid under the fence and helped Rick up.
While the two boys where laughing and recovering from that, Dale had made his way to them, already figured out what happened. "These fences bite once in awhile guys." he said, joining the laughter.
The three of them made their way across the field, Rick being extravagantly careful under the next fence. Sioux stopped them on the other side of the fence,"This is the edge of our map guys, this is the farthest we've been!"
They followed an old wide trail, only a few parts of it were overgrown, or had trees fallen across it. They stopped for a water and Bazooka break, Sioux quickly added some rough details to another page of his map, marking a couple of spots that looked good for a camp out. They compared the comics from the gum wrappers, and checked to see what they could order with enough comics before they moved on. Sioux was saving wrappers to get the pocket knife, Rick was saving to get the camera, But Dale didn't really seem interested in the Bazooka prizes.
They walked on for another hour when they came to the end of the creek running into a river? Thecreek ran roughly east into the river that ran north / south. And there was a clear trail running along the side of the river. The three boys were perplexed, and hungry. They made the decision to make a fire for lunch and discuss what to do next. While they cooked andate, they decided to go north for awhile, to see where the trail leads. It wasn't to late in the day, yet.
They drowned the fire before they set off again. They were trying to figure out this new mystery; it looked like a river, but the banks were to neat, it almost looked man-made. They thought it might be a canal maybe, but, those were a really long time ago.
The three agreed to take a Bazooka break and then turn back after the next curve. Dale pulled a small telescope from his pack and looked north up the trail. "Hey!It looks like an old bridge or something up there!" Dale said excitedly, "take a look," he said as he passed the scope to Rick.
Rick took a look, fixing ona point in the distance, he let out a shrill whistle. "Wow! That's something worth exploring!" he said as he checked his watch. "Ah boogers, we gotta head back." he handed the scope on to Sioux.
Sioux was mesmerized. "I gotta add that to the map!" he handed the scope back to Dale. While the other two packed up, Sioux made some quick notes and sketches in his notebook.
All three of the boys were excited and talking the entire walk back. They were making plans for explorations, camping trips, and discoveries in the coming summer. They did agree that the first camp out had to be in the clubhouse.
As they passed through the cow field Dale dropped off to head home. The remaining two boys trudged on towards the clubhouse. As they were walking Sioux stopped dead in his tracks, glancing up and down the trail.
"What's the matter with you?" Rick asked
"Um... Give me a minute..." Sioux trailed off, thinking. He paced back and forth for a minute. "I bet you we could ride our bikes through here."Getting more excited as he got into the idea He started talking faster. "Oh yes man! We could ride and get places faster and have more time to explore! And ooh ooh! We could hijack the bike trailers and load our camping gear and the whole bit! What do you think!"
Rick jumped up and down sharing in the excitement. "Yep, yep! That's the ticket! I was really stuck trying to figure how to stuff all my camping gear into my backpack. You nailed it dude!"
They re-thought all of the adventure plans they had discussed earlier, due to the idea of the bikes. Rick said he would call Dale and get him in on the new idea.
The two boys made their way to the clubhouse, then went their separate ways for the evening. They each were dreaming about the coming bike adventures, and camping trips. Only two more weeks of school before they were free to roam the woods and river.
