Supply Run!
Sioux and Rick chose Saturday to go to the flea-market. They new they could get day old doughnuts cheap, if they got there early enough.
The boys spent Friday stocking the clubhouse cooler with food, and taking their sleeping gear to. They didn't want to have to try to remember everything on Monday for the camp out. Dale said he would show up for the camp out, but he might be late, farm stuff.
Saturday morning dawned cool and clear, Sioux and Rick stood at the end of Rick's driveway. They were planning the route, and working the courage to ride along the busy road.
Sioux looked up and down the road, this would be the first time both boys were aloud to ride to the flea-market. "Well, saddle up pilgrim,"Sioux said as he got on his bike.
"Let's ride!" Rick yelped as they peddled their bikes onto the road.
Being early, there wasn't much traffic, yet. But the boys knew there would be plenty on the way home. They had planned the route so they would only be the main road for a few minutes, then they would take mostly sideroads to the flea-market.
They made goodtime, covering the four miles quickly. They found a place to lock up the bikes. It was still early, people were busy setting up their stands and tables still. The two boys made a bee-line for the first building, that's where the doughnut guy was.
The boys made their way through the building, it wasn't really open yet, no one seemed to mind them being there. A pudgy older man wearing a bakers outfit, was busy filling his glass cases. Looking over the case the baker looked over the two hungry looking boys. "Let's see if I can recall," the man said scratching his chin. Pointing at Sioux he said, "you look like powdered sugar, if I remember right, and you,"he pointed at Rick, "are one glazed and one cream stick." The baker got the doughnuts out for the boys, and put them in separate bags.
Sioux and Rick gawked at the man. "Just... How?" was all Sioux could say.
The man smiled at the boys, "I've always been good at that, I remember you two from the last time you were here with your parents. And, because your so early, the doughnuts are only a quarter each. You beat the rush!"
The boys left the building munching on their treats and marveling at the baker. They had some shopping to do. They were hoping to find a couple of flashlights at the market, then they needed to raid the supermarket for gum and comic books. They had saved a couple of weeks of allowance for this, so they wanted to get all they needed.
The two boys went up and down the rows quickly, searching for flashlights. They finally found some on one of the outlying stands. They looked small, but hardy. They got them cheap, now they just had to remember to buy batteries at the store.
Happy with their lights and several other things they had bought. Sioux and Rick made their way back to their bikes. It was only a short ride to the store, they were there in just a few minutes.
Sioux made for the candy aisle, he wanted to find a box of Bazooka to make sure they had enough for the camp out, and he was saving the comics to get the telescope, too. Rick went to the comic books, he was always looking for a new one to read.
Sioux took it upon himself to find the batteries for their flashlights, before finding Rick again. They both had some quarters after going through the check out, so they raided the machines at the front of the store.Rick got a couple of high bounce balls, Sioux didn't get anything good this time.
The boys set out for home, with backpacks full of the goodies they had bought. They pedaled fast so they could get off of the main road. Sioux was in the lead when they made it to the back roads they had taken to get there.
A lot things happened at once. A squirrel darted out on front of Sioux, causing him to swerve, brake, and wreck his bike. Rick made a hard stop within an inch of Sioux's scratched hand.
Sioux jumped up, shaken. "Man! Squirrel! BULL-SNOT!!!" He threw up his hands, straitened his helmet, and picked up his bike.
While Sioux was checking himself and his bike over, Rick started to giggle, Sioux shot him a scowl. "I think that squirrel was trying to take you out dude!" Sioux joined I the giggling. "I'm serious," Rick continued, "I saw him sitting there a ways back, he waited to jump out until you were right there! It's a conspiracy man!" Both boys were now laughing, joking about predatory squirrels, and birds dropping 'bombs'.
The rest of the ride home was easy, except for occasional eruption of laughter. Sioux came through the incident with only a miner case of road rash, and new suspicion of squirrels.
The boys went to the clubhouse before going home dropping off the supplies they had gotten for the camp out coming up.
Let summer begin!
