Scientist 1: "Вы уверены, что это сработает? Потому что если нет, то мы можем потерять несколько очень дорогих подводных лодок и высококвалифицированных солдат."
["Are you sure that this will work? Because if it doesn't then we might lose some very expensive submarines, and highly skilled soldiers."]

For the past few years, humans have been at war with Sirens. To fight back, they found wisdom cubes and used them to create Kansen, or ship girls. These Kansen are made from WW2 and pre WW2 naval ships that have been given a wisdom cube to turn them into sentient beings. They are the main fighting force against the Sirens and thus created the Azur Lane program.

Although they were originally made to save humanity from the Sirens, some factions defected from their nations and sided with the Siren forces. These include the Sakura Empire of Japan and the Iron Blood of Germany.

Scientist 2: "Мы не узнаем, если не попробуем. К тому же, если у нас получится, у нас будет шанс побороться с Сиренами. Мы до сих пор не смогли найти Северный парламент Кансен, так что это наш единственный выход."
["Well we won't know if we don't try. Plus, if we succeed, we will have a fighting chance against the Sirens. We still haven't been able to locate the Northern Parliament Kansen, so this is our only option."]

Russia's faction is known as the Northern Parliament, but as of recently, their ships disappeared during an investigation of suspected Siren activity in the Arctic circle. The only vessels left at their disposal are modern ships.

The issue with that is the incompatibility of the wisdom cubes to any modern equipment, and sending out manned vessels is a waste due to how powerful the Siren and Kansen ships are. But they never gave up. Instead, the Russian Navy, paired with their nations best scientists, have finally figured out how to create Kansen from modern vessels. By turning a human into a Kansen.

PA system: <"Пожалуйста, не подходите к полигону! Пожалуйста, не подходите к испытательному полигону!">
["Please stand clear of the testing grounds! Please stand clear of the testing grounds!"]

Scientist 1: "Я надеюсь, что вы правы насчет этого эксперимента, потому что это будет вычитаться из наших зарплат."
["I hope your right about this experiment because this is going to come out of our paychecks."]

Five Typhoon class submarines are in the bay of the facility. On each one is a Spetsnaz operative holding a red wisdom cube that has cables connected to the subs. These five were selected for their exceptional success rate, teamwork,  and skillsets. One in particular is the stealth specialist, nominated as the leader of the group despite him being the youngest.

I look up from the cube in my hands to the voice that called me.

Y/N: "Да, что такое Алекс?"
["Yeah, what is it Alex?"]
