I stared blankly at a wall trying to go through every possibility in my head. It was the end of the school and I am sitting in the hospital's lounge, listening, well trying, to Mercedes and Kenzie go on and on about the mystery boy. What we knew so far was his name: Dunstan. No known last name or any other general details...
Apparently he's better then the rest of us and doesn't need to tell us a damn thing about himself...
So why am I resenting him so much? Thinking about him so much? These thoughts drained the blood from my body as I tried to dig deeper into my brain. The fact that I knew his face from somewhere bothered me. I've never seen him at my old school, or around the neighbourhood.
I felt a nudge against my knee and snapped back to reality. Mercedes was smirking at me.
"Hey, daydreamer! Are you thinking about a certain someone?"
"Only Kale." I winked at her making her laugh. "What did you nudge me for?"
"While you were zoned out I asked you what you think of Dunstan."
"Oh. Well... He seems goth."
The twins burst into hysterical fits of laughter, grabbing each other to keep from falling to the floor.
"He is not!" Cried Kenzie.
"No, definitely not!" Mercedes agreed, wiping a tear from the corner of her eye.
"I don't know... I'm pretty sure he is."
"No!" The girls said in unison, passionately protecting someone they didn't even know.
I changed the subject seeing that this one was going nowhere. "What are you two?"
Their faces dropped. "What do you mean?" asked Kenzie innocently, avoiding eye contact.
"Mackenzie... Mercedes... Kale told me everything. I know that he's a werewolf and the history of how we all came to be here, in this place."
"I see." Mercedes stood and paced back and forth, shaking her head.
"Just spill, Ced." Kenzie nudged her sister.
"Yes, yes." Mercedes waved a hand at Mackenzie, then turned to look at me. "Are you sure you're ready to hear me out?"
I nodded eagerly.
"Ok..." She took a deep breath and sat on the faded red couch across from me. "Our father was a demon. To be specific, he was a demon that harnessed the element of fire. When Kenz and I were born we discovered that we had inherited traits from him. I inherited his skill of harnessing the flickering energy of fire. Mackenzie gained his fighting techniques and super strength. Apart, we are half of each other, but together we are a whole being. The first demon to be split between two souls."
"Between two souls?" I tried to grasp the concept.
"Yes." Mackenzie nodded at the same time as Mercedes. "We are the first set of twins to be produced between a human and demon. We are unique in every way. Well not as unique as you."
"Kenzie!" hissed Mercedes, shooting her a warning glare.
"Why am I so unique?" I cried. "Why is it that everyone seems to know except for me?"
"You have to find out for yourself." Whispered Mercedes sadly. "If we told you... the bad things that could happen. It wouldn't be pretty or fun for anyone of us, Elizabeth. Especially yourself."
"Fine." I sulked, then got on my feet. "I'm going to bed."
"Good night." The twins chimed to my back as I paced away.
Guilt tore at my soul as I stormed away. I shouldn't be mad at the twins so why am I? Anger is all I can manage to feel these days and I don't like it... And earlier... I didn't mean to explode at Rudy the way I did. Just thinking about his reaction makes me feel terrible.
By the time I had reached my corridor my cheeks were flowing with tears and my eyes blurred. Subtle sobs heaved at my chest as u fumbled with the doorknob.
"Let me help you with that." A guy's voice, deep and rich, sounded beside me as a hand stretched and tightened over my own, twisting and pushing the door open.
"Thank you." I choked out, not even bothering to see who was helping me. I collapsed onto my bed and buried my face in my pillow.
"Are you alright?" The voice came again. Hesitant footsteps made their way into my room.
"I'm fine." I mumbled into my pillow.
"Pardon?"
I lifted my face and looked in the direction of the voice, rubbing at my eyes. "I'm fine!" When my hand fell, I saw who that the voice belonged to the mystery boy: Dunstan.
