“Cas!” The words rushed unbidden from Dean’s lips as the hunter stumbled forwards to catch his falling friend, discarding his weapon and managing to support his head as Castiel’s body collapsed to the ground. Blood flowed freely out of the laceration in the angel’s chest and as Dean clutched him tightly, his hands desperate to keep a hold of him, the wound left bloody smears on his clothing. “Cas, no…” Once again words were wrenched from his throat, husky and dry, as he was overwhelmed with sudden emotion, every muscle contracting, trying to fight back the sudden wave of tears until he could hold it no more. “Please…” Then the tears came. Uncontrollable sobs shook the man’s body as he reached desperately for Castiel’s hand, clutching it tightly against his blood-smeared palm. The other hand supported Cas’ head, his fingers buried in his thick hair; Castiel’s invariably bright blue eyes devoid of emotion as Dean’s nose hovered only inches above his. Tears blurred his vision as the angel’s face swam into focus and as he pressed his forehead to Castiel’s he felt the shocking contrast of cold skin on hot, and the final shudder as the last breath was released from the lungs of the angel who had always watched out for him. The angel who had fought, and killed his own kind, who had rebelled against his family and who had been thrown from heaven. The angel who had done it all for him. Suddenly, inexplicably, the burden became too much for him, and his lips parted to release a scream, but what came out was a half choked sob. Dean choked it back midway as his gaze was torn from Castiel’s body to an approaching figure. Sam.

A part of him wanted to snarl at him, to tell him to back off and leave him alone, but the better half of him simply didn’t have the energy, so instead he just bowed his head. After a short pause he felt the slight pressure of a hand on his shoulder, but he didn’t want Sam’s comfort. He wanted Cas.
